WOLVES DEFEAT DEFENDING NSIC CHAMPION SOUTHWEST STATE

Jan. 15, 2002

Reversal of fortune -- NSU's Richard Goethals gets a deserved break just after defeating Southwest State's Josh Soupir (right) 7-3 Tuesday night. Soupir defeated Goethals for the 133-pound conference title last season.

Northern State started its conference dual season off in impressive fashion Tuesday night, defeating the defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Champion Southwest State University Mustangs 23-13 in NSU's Barnett Center.

The dual was originally scheduled to take place in Marshall, Minn., but a fire on SSU's campus prompted the move of venue to Northern. The early January blaze destroyed the campus food-service building and caused smoke damage to other buildings, including SSU's gymnasium.

NSU scored five decisions, while junior 184-pounder Joey Krause (Aberdeen) and sophomore 149-pounder Dana Dargatz earned major decisions on the night.

Dargatz on the prowl -- Sophomore 149-pounder Dana Dargatz improved to 6-1 in dual competition with his win Tuesday night.

After trading leads early in the dual, senior 133-pounder Richard Goethals (Belle Fourche) put the Wolves up for good with a 7-3 decision over Josh Soupir. Goethals' win gave NSU a 10-8 lead in the dual and also avenged a loss to Soupir in last season's 133-pound NSIC championship match.

It also started a four-match win string for NSU, capped by freshman Ron Reszel's (Andover, Minn.) double-overtime 2-1 decision over SSU sophomore Dusty Williamson in the 157 pound weight class.

With the win, Northern improves to 4-4 in dual action this season and 1-0 in NSIC dual competition. Northern hosts NSIC foe Minnesota-Morris tomorrow night.
