NSU's Barnett Center underwent a major face lift Saturday night, from hosting the 2002 NSIC Indoor Track and Field championships Thursday through Saturday to hosting the NCAA II Midwest Wrestling Regional Sunday.

Anderson in action Sunday

Senior 174-pounder Cory Anderson (Milbank) and sophomore heavyweight Baron Blanchard (Kindred, N.D.) took second in their respective weight classes at the NCAA II Midwest Region Wrestling Championships hosted by Northern Sunday.

Both will represent Northern at the NCAA II National Championships held in Kenosha, Wis. March 8-9 and hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside. The top four placewinners in each weight class advance to nationals.

It will be Anderson's first trip to nationals, while Blanchard will be making his second appearance.

Other notables for Northern on the day included junior 184-pounder Joey Krause, who finished fifth, and sophomore 149-pounder Dana Dargatz, who placed sixth.

Both Anderson and Blanchard received byes in the first round, then won their next two matches on the mat to advance to the regional championship round.

For complete results, see link at left. Central Oklahoma, the top-ranked team in the nation, walked away with Midwest Region team title. UCO athletes also walked away with some hardware, as junior 197 pounder Muhammed Lawal earned Most Valuable Wrestler honors and freshman 125 pounder Chris Saferite earned Freshman of the Year honors. Indianapolis coach Terry Wetherald and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville coach Booker Benford earned co-Coach of the Year honors.
