Wolves Pick Up Second Win

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Wolves improved their record to 2-0 after Friday night's action. The following is a class by class breakdown of the Parent's Day Match. The Wolves picked up two pins en route to a 26-21 victory over Jamestown. The Wolves travel to SDSU on December 10th where they'll face Princeton on Friday at 4:00. On Saturday, NSU travels to St. Cloud State for a 7:00 dual on Saturday.

149 Match-up
In the first match-up of the evening, the Northern's R.C. Sisson was looking to notch his first win of the season versus Jake Esser of Redfield, SD.

Esser drew first blood being awarded a two-point taked down and picking up three points for a near fall. Esser continued to control the action aggressively match until he pinned Sissen at 2:00.

157 Match-up
In the second match-up of the evening Northern's Spencer Dockery matched up against Jamestown's Carlyle Scott.

Scott delivered first with a two-point takedown. Seconds after that, Carlyle was penalized for an illegal hold tying the bout at 2-2. In a furious match-up Dockery and Carlyle agressively attacked each other until Dockery tossed and pinned Carlyle at the 1:54 mark.

165 Match-up
In the third match-up of the evening Northern's Matt Englund squared off against JC's Kyle Pawlak.

The first period ended in a 0-0 deadlock. The period didn't feature much offense as both wrestlers methodically tried to look for their opening.

The second period with JC choosing down. Carlyle was first on the scoreboard with an escape :40. The second period ended with a 1-0 JC advantage.

In the final period Englund opted down. at 1:00 Englund switched the advantage picking up a two-point reversal. Then, with :34 remaining Englund picked up a three-point near fall award. The round ended with Englund picking up an extra point off of riding time giving him 6-1 advantage.

174 Match-up
In the fourth match-up of the evening Northern's Jason Hill squared off against JC's Clyde Switzer.

In the first round, Hill jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a take down and a near fall.

In the second period, Hill chose nuetral. Switzer took the early round advantage with a take down putting the match at 5-2. Hill quickly rebounded with an escape to end the period.

The third period was anti-climactic as Hill pinned Switzer at 5:44. The pin lifted the Wolves to a 15-6 dual advantage.

184 Match-up
Northern's Todd Naasz squared off against Nick Small of Jamestown in the 184 pound match up.

Small started the with a quick take down and a two-point near fall. Giving him a quick 4-0 lead. Naasz quickly picked up a reversal putting the match at 4-2 ending the period.

Small chose down to start the second period. Naasz picked up a three-point near fall after aggressively riding him for the entire round. Naasz ended the second period with a 5-4 advantage and choice in the final period.

Naasz started the 3rd with a quick reverse within 10 seconds. One minute later Naasz picked up a takedown giving him a 8-4 advantage. Naasz continued his dominance as he picked up another takedown at the 6:00 minute mark. The match ended in a gridlock, but Naasz decisively picked up the win at 12-4.

At intermission, the Wolves held onto a 19-6 match lead.

197 Match-up
Northern's Cory Wellnitz squared off against Ryan Vincent of Jamestown in the 184 pound match up.

By the 1:30 jumped out to a 5-0 lead attempting a pinning combination which resulted in a three-point near fall. The score would remain 5-0 in the favor of Wellnitz.

Wellnitz started down and picked up a 1-point escape early. At the 4:20 Wellnitz added to his lead by picking up a takedown giving him a 8-0 lead. Wellnitz continued to control the round ending the period with the two-point nearfall at the buzzer leaving NSU's Wellnitz up 10-0.

Jamestown down 10-0 chose nuetral. Facing a 10-0 deficit Vincent desperately looked for a takedown early. Wellnitz thwarted JC's efforts and responded with a takedown at the 6:00 mark giving him a commanding 12-0 lead. Vincent worked his way to the scoreboard with an escape at the 6:30 mark leaving the contest at 12-1. Wellnitz countered with another takedown and finished the match 15-2.

Heavyweight Match-up
Jamestown's Brandon Lemer picked up a forfeit win. This marks an end to Lemer's drought against NSU after having to wrestle against NSU's Baron Blanchard the past three years. Lemer is a two-time NAIA All-American.

125 Match-up
Northern's Chas Welch squared off against Shane Hase of Jamestown in the 125 pound match up.

The first period ended at 2-2 free for all. Hase picked up his two points on a takedown with Welch quickly reversing to knot the score at 2-2.

Hase chose down to start the second. Hase moved to a 3-2 advantage with with an escape. Welch aggressively pursued Hase but to no avail as the JC wrestler successfully evaded Chas to end the period.

Northern began the period down as Welch looked to pick up a point on an escape. Welch easily escaped tying evening the match at 1-1. At 5:30 Welch finally struck paydirt as he landed a takedown giving him a 5-3. Following a Hase escape and a Welch takedown the match would end 8-4.

133 Match-up
The 133 match-up featured Brandon Haman pitted against JC's Matt Miller.

The first period was deadlocked until the 2:46 mark when Miller picked up a takedown giving him a 2-0 lead to finish the period.

The second period started with Haman down. The period began much the same as the first ended with Miller gaining valuable ride time. Haman finally evened it up with a takedown at 4:00. Miller ended the round with an escape putting the match at 3-2.

Miller began the third down and picked up a quick two-point reversal giving him a 5-2 lead. After a dizzying third period Haman knotted the score at 5-5 with a takedown. Miller countered with an escape giving him a 6-5 lead. Northern get a quick takedown giving them a 7-6 lead before Miller ended the match with an escape equalling the score at 7-7. Miller's riding time would give him a 8-7 victory.
