Aberdeen, S.D.- The Wolves opened up with a 3-0 lead after Chas Welch defeated Charlie Dawson in an 8-5 decision. From there the seventh ranked Mavericks ripped off 40 straight points on their way to the 40-3 win.

125 Match-up
In the first match-up of the evening, the Northern’s Chas Welch and Mankato’s Charlie Dawson were both looking to pick up their 12th win of the season.

The match began very slowly as each wrestler methodically tested each other looking for weaknesses. Welch drew first blood at the 1:42 mark. Chas held position to run the period out holding on to a 2-0 lead.

The second period started out with Welch reversing at the 1:35 mark increasing his lead to 3-0. At the :42 mark Welch increased the margin to 5-0 with a two-point takedown. The second period ended with a 5-0 Northern advantage.

The third period began with a one-move escape for Dawson followed up with a two-point take down putting the match at 6-3 in favor of Welch. Dawson continued his offensive approach putting the score at 7-5 with only :30 remaining. Welch successfully held off Dawson to earn a 8-5 match win.

133 Match-up
In the 133 match up, Northern’s Brandon Haman squared up with Mankato’s Joey Neigum.

The match began with a two-point take down at 2:17 mark giving Neigum an early advantage. Neigum continued to control the match throughout the first period. Neigum ended the period with a 2-0 lead.

In the second period Neigum began with an escape to give him a 3-0 lead. At the 1:00 minute mark Neigum extended his lead with a two-point takedown increasing his advantage to 5-0. At the :27 mark Haman was called for stalling giving Mankato a 6-0 lead to end the period.

Neigum began the third period with a two-point near fall. Neigum finished the match in control winning 9-0 after riding time was added.

141 Match-up
In the 141 match up, Northern’s Charles Schimmel squared up against Mankato’s Brandon Girtz. After a barrage of takedowns and escapes Girtz led Northern’s Schimmel 8-4. The furious action continued for the remainder of the period. The first period consisted of eight Girtz takedowns and seven Schimmel escapes leaving the score at 16-7 in favor Girtz.

The second period began quickly with Girtz picking up an escape and a takedown within the first :30. The two wrestlers continued to trade takedown for escape leaving Schimmel at the short end of the exchange. The period ended with a 23-9 Girtz lead.

Schimmel began the third period with a quick escape before being countered by Girtz’s two-point takedown. The match was ended technical fall at 5:15.

149 Match-up
In the 149 match up, Northern’s R.C. Sisson matched up with Jason Rhoten of Mankato.

The Mankato grappler capped off a pinning combination capped off with the pin ending the match at 1:10.

157 Match-up
In the 157 match up, Northern’s Spencer Dockery matched up against Mankato’s Math Bitz. Math struck first with a two-point takedown followed by an immediate Northern escape leaving the score at 2-1. At the :19 mark Bitz looked to make his move with a two-point takedown. Dockery held off Bitz’s attack, but Dockery still found himself down 7-1 after a Bitz near fall.

The second period began with a Dockery escape moving the score to 7-2. At the 1:17 mark Bitz picked up his third takedown of the match putting the score at 9-2. After an escape Dockery pulled to within 9-3. At the :20 mark Dockery picked up his first takedown of the match putting the score at 9-5 Bitz.

Northern picked neutral to start the third period. Bitz picked up a quick takedown followed by a quick Dockery escape. Dockery picked up momentum and wrestled a strong third period but was unable to overcome the deficit leaving him at the losing end of a 12-6 Bitz win.

165 Match-up
In the 165 match up, Northern’s Matt Englund matched up against Mankato’s Jeremiah Nowak. The match began very methodically as both wrestler’s slowly tested each other’s strengths and weaknesses. After a thrilling three minutes of action the score was knotted at zero.

The second period looked much like a carbon copy of the first period. The only difference was Englund picking up a nearly 2:00 of riding time.

The third period began with Englund down. The gridlock was finally broken as Nowak picked up a near fall at the :27 mark. The match ended with a Nowak 3-0 win.

174 Match-up
In the 174 match up, Northern’s Jason Hill battled Mankato’s Travis Krinkie. Krinkie struck first with a takedown followed by Hill’s rebuttal in the form of an escape leaving the score at 2-1. At the :35 Hill picked up his first takedown of the match. Krinkie, however, quickly responded with an escape putting the match at 4-3 advantage Krinkie.

The second period Krinkie picked up a takedown and then capped the takedown off with a three-point near fall. The five-point combination left Hill with a 9-3 deficit. After a Hill escape the period ended with an 11-4 Krinkie advantage.

The third period consisted of a Krinkie escape and takedown leaving the final score 15-4 in favor of Krinkie.

184 Match-up
In the 184 match up, Northern’s Todd Naasz battled Mankato’s Todd Koons. Koons picked up the match’s first points with a takedown at 1:48. Naasz responded with a two-point reversal. After another takedown and a three-point takedown Koons finished the first period with a 7-2 lead.

With a 7-2 lead in his pocket Koons aggressively attacked Naasz. Koons’ efforts helped pick up a two-point reversal. With :05 remaining Koons picked up a three-point near fall to give him a 12-2 lead.

Koons held several Naasz charges off to ensure hold on to 12-2 victory.
