Aberdeen, SD – Northern State University (1-1) started strong as Logan Hayman won the first match of the night at 133lbs by a score of 11-0 giving the Wolves a 4-0 lead in the dual. The Tigers did not give up winning the next two matches one on a pin by Spencer Novotny and the other on a decision by Thomas Konechne. This gave the Tigers a 9-4 advantage in the dual.
In the next four matches the Wolves got three pins and a forfeit to take a commanding lead 28-9 over the Tigers. The pins came from Dana Dargatz, Matt England, and Jason Hill. The Wolves lost the final two matches of the night but still came up with the big win at home 31-16 over the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers.
125- In the final match of the evening Dakota Wesleyan’s Andrew Leggott jumped on top early as he got a take down to go up 2-0 against the Wolves Austin Johnsrud (Fr., Watford City, ND). Johnsrud made the score 2-1 but Leggott got another take down to go up 4-1. Johnsrud got another escape point to make the score 2-4 at the end of the first period.
In the second period Leggott kept the pressure on as he got 2 points for a reversal and the score was now 6-2. Johnsrud got another escape point to make the score 6-3 but before the end of the period Leggott got another take down to make the score 8-3 after two periods.
Leggott continued to dominate the match, as he finished off Johnsrud by defeating him 14-6. With this match the final score of the dual ended up to be 31-16 in favor of the Wolves.
133-Logan Hayman (Fr., Grand Island, NE) got off to a quick start as he took a commanding 7-0 lead against Billy Murtha at the end of the first period. Hayman got the first take down of the match and continued to put the pressure on.
Hayman also controlled the second period scoring four more points putting the score at 11-0 after the second period.
Hayman would win the match by a final score of 11-0 giving the Wolves the lead at 4-0 in the dual.
141- Mark Burkart(Fr., Cody, WY) got pinned at the 2:23 in the first period by DWU’s Spencer Novotny. This would give the Tigers a 6-4 lead after two wrestlers.
149- The first period between Jesse Wood(R-Jr., Milbank, SD) of Northern State and Thomas Konechne of Dakota Wesleyan was a competitive one as it ended up being 0-0 after one.
Wood opened up the scoring in the second period at the: 53 second mark, as he went up 2-0. Konechne got an escape point late in the period to make it 2-1 after two.
Konechne got another escape point at the start of the third period to tie the score 2-2. At the end of regulation the score remained 2-2. The match went into an exciting overtime where Thomas Konechne defeated Jesse Wood 4-2 as he got a take down to win the match and put DWU up 9-4 in the dual.
157- Dana Dargatz (Sr., Webster, SD) started fast and continue to put the pressure on as he pinned Nigel Masters at the 2:48 mark in the first period. This gave the Wolves a 10-9 led in the dual.
165- Matt England (Sr., Pierre, SD) of Northern State gave the Wolves another big win as he pinned Jerry Stravia at the 1:30 mark of the match. This increased the Wolves lead to 16-9 in the dual.
174- Jason Hill (Sr., Milbank, SD) kept the Wolves rolling as he pined Paul Wilson of DWU at the : 43-second mark of the match. This increased the Wolves lead to 22-9 in the dual.
184- Shawn Lewis (Jr., Tyndall, SD) got a forfeit and the Wolves lead would increase to 28-9.
197- Andrew Schmaltz went up 2-0 early in the first period, but Todd Naasz(R-So. Mobridge, SD) fought back and tied it up at 2-2 at the end of the first period.
Naasz took his first lead of the match, as he went up 4-2 on a take down late in the second period.
Naasz continued the attack in the third period; as he would score four points in the final period and go on to win 8-2. This increases the Wolves lead to 31-9.
HWT- After one period between Northern State’s Jess Hockley (R-So., Mobridge, SD) and Dakota Wesleyan’s AJ Stensrud the score remained at 0-0.
Jess Hockley went up 1-0 half way through the second period on an escape. The second period remained 1-0 in favor of Hockley.
In the third period Stensrud scored early in the period to tie the score at 1-1. The rest of the period saw a lot of action but there was no scoring and the score remained 1-1.
In the overtime period it saw Dakota Wesleyan’s AJ Stensrud got a stalling point to win the match 2-1 which made the score 31-12 in favor of the Wolves.
