Aberdeen, SD- The Northern State Wolves improved their record to 2-1 in dual meets as they defeated the St. Cloud State Huskies (0-2) 25-12 in Aberdeen, SD. The Wolves used two pins one by Jesse Wood and one by Logan Hayman to ensure the win. The two teams were evenly matched as seven of the ten matches were decided by three points or less.
141- Mark Burkart of Northern State and Tom Messerli of St. Cloud State felt each other out in the first round, as the score remained 0-0 after the first period. The two continued to battle in the second period but Burkart was able to break the tie as he scored on an early escape to go up 1-0. Tom Messerli used an escape to tie the score up 1-1. Messerli scored late in the third period to take a 3-1 lead over Burkart. Burkart scored on an escape late in the period but there was not enough time left in the period as he would come up short losing 2-3 to Messerli. St. Cloud State took the early lead in the duel 3-0.
149- Jesse Wood controlled the match against Matt Jackson. Wood pinned Jackson at the 1:30 mark of the first period giving the Wolves a 6-3 lead after two wrestlers. Wood improved his overall record to 14-6.
157- Dana Dargatz of Northern State scored on a takedown early in the first period to go up 2-0 but Shane Tappe of St. Cloud State would battle back scoring on an escape to make the score 2-1. In the second period Dargatz scored on an escape to make the score 3-1 in his favor. Tappe would make the score 3-2 on an escape early in the second period. .Dargatz would hang on to win an exciting match 3-2. Dargatz overall record is now 8-6 overall on the season.
165- Matt Englund of Northern State and Nate Schut of St. Cloud State battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first round. Schut opened up the scoring in the second period as he used an escape to go up 1-0 over Englund. They continued to battle in the second period but neither wrestler could score another point. In the third period Englund tied the score 1-1 on an escape. Schut used a takedown late in the period to win the match 3-1 over Englund. That put the score of the dual at 9-6 in favor of the Wolves.
174-Jason Moore of St. Cloud State used a take down early in the match to go up 2-0 over Jason Hill of Northern State. Hill used a reversal late in the first period to even the match at 2-2 going into the second period. Hill went up 3-2 early in the second period on an escape. Moore went ahead 4-3 late in the second period as he scored on a take down. Hill would get a penalty point to tie the score 4-4. Moore went up 5-4 on an escape early in the third period. With the riding point Jason Moore defeated Jason Hill 6-4. With the win the Huskies tied the score up 9-9.
184-Shawn Lewis of Northern State used a take down to go ahead 2-0 at the end of the first period. Jario Sanddoval of St. Cloud used an escape to edge closer to Lewis, as the score at the end of the second period was 2-1. Lewis used an escape in the third period to go up 3-1 over Sanddoval. Lewis would hold on to get a 4-1 win over Sanddoval. With the win the Wolves regained the lead 12-9 in the dual.
197- Todd Naasz of Northern State used a take down early in the first period to go ahead 2-0 over Cody Byrns of St. Cloud State. Naasz would score again on a reversal in the second period to go ahead 4-0 over Byrns. In the third period Byrns used a reversal to close the gap to 4-2 but Naasz would get a reversal of his own to go up 6-2. Naasz scored another three points on a near fall and added another point for riding time as he won the match 10-2 and improved his recored to 17-7 overall. With the win the Wolves went up 16-9 in the dual.
HWT- Jess Hockley of Northern State and Brad Nowak of St. Cloud State wrestled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. Hockley scored on a penalty point and a reversal to go up 3-0 in the second period. With an escape by Nowak the second period ended 3-1. With another escape point by Nowak early in the third period the score closed to 3-2. Hockley would hold on to win the match 3-2 and improve his record to 9-12 on the year. With the win the Wolves went up 19-9 in the dual.
125- Nick Wasche of St. Cloud State went up 2-0 over Austin Johnsrud of Northern State in the first period on a take down. Johnsrud would use an escape to make the score 2-1 at the end of the first period. Johnsrud tied the score up 2-2 on an escape in the second period. The second period ended 2-2. Wasche would get three points a reversal and a near fall to take a 7-2 lead. Johnsrud would get a reversal and a takedown to close the gap to 7-6. Wasche got a pair of escapes to go up 9-6 in the match. The match would end 10-6 in favor of Wasche of St. Cloud State. With the win the Huskies closed the gap to 19-12.
133- Logan Hayman of Northern State pinned Brent Johnson of St. Cloud State at the 1:18 mark of the first period to end the dual. Hayman improved his record to 12-9. With the pin the Wolves would win the dual 25-12.
The Wolves will see their next action on January 20 when Upper Iowa comes to town. Wrestling will start at 7:00 pm in the Barnett Center.
