Aberdeen, SD- The first ever meeting between the Northern State Wolves (2-2, 0-1 NSIC) and the #13 Upper Iowa Peacocks (4-2-1, 1-0 NSIC) was dominated by the Peacocks as they defeated the Wolves by a score of 39-6. The Wolves got two wins on the night, one by Dana Dargatz and one by Todd Naasz. Dargatz beat Brandon Heying 4-3 and Naasz defeated Matt Norton 11-10.

The Peacocks used three straight pins by #7 Brian Black at heavyweight, #7 Tyler Mumbulo at 125 and Ralph Acosta at 133 to open up a huge lead against the Wolves.

149- Jesse Wood (R-Jr., Milbank, SD) of Northern State University went up 2-0 early in the first period with a take down against Upper Iowa’s Cory Schmitz. The first period ended with Wood up 2-0. Wood and Schmitz would both get a reversal and an escape to make the score 5-3 in favor of Wood with a minute left in the second period. Schmitz used a takedown late in the second period to even the score at 5-5. Schmitz would outscore Wood 10-1 in the third period to take the match 15-6 and get the major decision. The win put the Peacocks up 4-0 to start the dual.

157- Dana Dargatz (Sr., Webster, SD) opened up the scoring against Brandon Heying on a takedown early in the first period. Heying closed the gap on an escape to make the score 2-1 in favor of Dargatz to end the first period. Heying used another escape to tie the score at 2-2 with a 1:30 left in the second period. Dargatz used an escape in the last minute of the match to go ahead 4-2 and went on to win 4-3. With the win Dargatz improved his record to 9-6 overall. The Wolves closed the gap to 3-4 with eight matches left on the night.

165- The match between Matt Englund (Sr., Pierre, SD) of Northern State University and Brady Hakeman of Upper Iowa remained scoreless at the end of the first period. Hakeman got Englund in a cradle to go ahead 3-0 to end the second period. Englund and Hakeman both used reversal to score early in the third period to make the score 5-2 in favor of Hakeman. Hakeman defeated Englund 7-3 and gave the Peacocks a 7-3 lead in the dual.

174- Upper Iowa’s #6 C.J. MacNaught went up 2-0 early in the first period over Jason Hill (Sr., Milbank, SD) of Northern State University. MacNaught used a reversal, a takedown and a two near falls to take the lead 11-1 to end the second period. MacNaught kept the pressure on in the third period as hedefeated Hill 16-1. The major decision gave the Peacocks a 11-3 lead in the dual.

184- The Peacocks would get a forfeit and improve their lead in the dual to 18-3.

197- Todd Naasz (R-So., Mobridge, SD) would score on a takedown and a near fall to give him a 5-0 lead in the middle of the first period. Matt Norton of Upper Iowa would use a reversal at the end of the first period to close the lead to 5-2. Norton used a pair of reversal’s to close the gap to within two to end the second period 8-6 in favor of Naasz. Norton would get two reversals in the third period to tie the score at 10-10. Naasz would hang on as he got the riding point to win the match 11-10. Naasz improved his overall record to 18-7 on the year. With the win the Wolves closed the gap in the dual to 6-18.

HWT- Jess Hockley (R-So., Sturgis, SD) got pinned at the 2:02 mark of the match by Upper Iowa’s #7 Brian Black. With the pin the Peacocks went up 24-6 in the dual.

125- Austin Johnsrud (Fr., Watford City, SD) would get pinned at the 1:47 mark of the match by #7 Tyler Mumbulo of Upper Iowa. With the pin the Peacocks increased their lead to 30-6 in the dual.

133- Upper Iowa’s Ralph Acosta would pin Logan Hyman (Fr., Grand Island, NE) of Northern State University at the 2:32 mark of the match. The Peacocks went up 36-6 in the dual.

141- Mark Burkart (Fr., Cody, WY) of Northern State University and Cory Schmitz of Upper Iowa ended the first period at 0-0. Schmitz used an escape early in the second period to go up 1-0 in the match. Burkart used an escaped to tie the score at 1-1 early in the third period. Schmitz took the lead 3-1 on a takedown and would hold on to win 3-2. The Peacocks won the dual 39-6.

Things don’t get any easier for the Wolves as they travel to Sioux Falls, SD to take on the #8 Augustana College Vikings on January 21 at 7:00.
