The Dragons Blow Fire on the Wolves
The Northern State University Wolves (2-4, 0-2 NSIC) fell to #11 MSU Moorhead Dragons (6-3, 1-0 NSIC) 34-6 at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves were only able to get two wins against the Dragons.
Austin Johnsrud started the Wolves off strong as he got a 6-2 victory over Joe Werner. This gave the Wolves a 3-0 lead in the match. The other victory came from Todd Naasz as he defeated Joe Facchini 3-0. The Dragons were able to take advantage as the Wolves were forced to forfeit two of their matches due to injuries.
The Dragons got a pin at 165 lbs by #2 Nate Baker over Matt England at the 1:45 mark of the match which put the dual out of reach for the Wolves.
125- Austin Johnsrud (Fr., Watford City, SD) used a couple of stalling points to go ahead of Joe Werner of MSU Moorhead 2-0 after two periods. Joe Werner tied the score at 2-2 with a reversal but Johnsrud took the lead back with an escape and a takedown to go up 5-2. Johnsrud scored one more point with riding time to defeat Warner 6-2. Johnsrud improved his record to 6-14 on the year and gave the Wolves a 3-0 led in the dual.
133- Troy McFarland of MSU Moorhead went up 2-0 early in the first period with a take down but Logan Hayman (Fr., Grand Island, NE) came back with an escape to close the lead to 2-1. McFarland used a flurry of points to go up 7-3 at the end of the first period. McFarland kept the pressure on as he used a take down and a near fall to go up 12-3 with :36 seconds left in the second period. Hayman was able to fight back and close the gap to 12-6 going into the third and final period. Hayman kept fighting back using an escape and a take down to close the gap to 12-9 early in the third period. McFarland used a reversal to go up 14-10 in the match and eventually hung on to a 17-10 win over Hayman. With the win MSU Moorhead tied the dual at 3-3.
149- Jesse Wood (R-Jr., Milbank, S.D.) of Northern State University opened up the scoring with a take down to go up 2-0 over Peter Hayes of MSU Moorhead. The first period would end with Wood ahead 2-1 over Hayes. Hayes would get a couple of escapes in the second period, but Wood used a takedown to keep the lead at 4-3. Hayes would use a point for stalling and a take down to come back in the third period and win the match 6-5. The win gave the Dragons a 10-3 led in the dual.
157- The Wolves would have to forfeit their match at 157, which improved the Dragons led to 16-3 over the Wolves.
165- #2 Nate Baker of MSU Moorhead would pin Matt Englund (Sr., Pierre, SD) of Northern State University at the 1:45 mark of the match. This increased the led for the Dragons to 22-3.
174- Jason Hill (Sr., Milbank, S.D.) of Northern State University and Bryan Cowdin of MSU Moorhead ended the first period scoreless. Cowdin opened up the scoring in the second period on a reversal to go up 2-0. In the third period Cowdin kept the pressure on as he scored two points on a reversal and one with riding time to win the match 5-0. The Dragons improved their lead to 25-3 in the dual.
184- The Wolves would have to forfeit their match at 184, which gave the Dragons a 31-3 lead over the Wolves.
197- Todd Naasz (R-So., Mobridge, S.D.) of Northern State University and Joe Facchini of MSU Moorhead ended the first period scoreless. Naasz used an escape and two stalling points to take the lead 3-0 over Facchini at the end of the second period. Naasz would win the match 3-0 and improve his record to 19-8 on the year. With the win the score was now 31-6 in favor of the Dragons.
HWT- #2 Chris Tuchsherer of MSU Moorhead used a couple of take downs to go ahead of Jess Hockley (R-So., Sturgis, S.D.) 4-1 at the end of one period. Tuchsherer kept the pressure on as he increased his lead to 7-1 at the end of the second period. With riding time Tuchsherer would win the match 8-1 and give the Dragons a 34-6 win in the dual.
The Wolves will host Dana College on January 28th at 12:00 pm at Aberdeen Central High School in Aberdeen, S.D.
