Vikings Sail Past Wolves

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State University Wolves (2-5, 0-2 NSIC) fell to the Dana College Vikings (14-1-1) 3-37 this afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. Dana took nine of the ten matches in the dual.

The only win for the Wolves came when Matt Englund defeated Trent Leichleiter 3-1 at 165lb. The Wolves had opportunities to win the match at 149 and 174 but were unable to get the breaks that they needed. The Vikings used pins at 125 and 141 by Craig Trampe and Terrence Almond to break the dual wide open. The Vikings also got a tech fall by Willie Parks at 184 to help them secure the victory.

125- Austin Johnsrud (Fr., Watford City, SD) got pinned at the 6:08 mark of the match by Craig Trampe. Dana College took the lead 6-0.

133- Sonny Silva of Dana College went up 2-0 early in the first period with a take down but Logan Hayman (Fr., Grand Island, NE) came back with an escape and a takedown to go up 3-2. To end the first period Silva was able to get a reversal to go up 4-3. Silva used a near fall and a take down to go up 9-3 at the end of the second period. Hayman came out in the third and got a reversal to close the gap to 9-5, but that was all the scorig that would be done as Silva would win the match 9-5 and give the Vikings a 9-0 lead in the dual.

141- Terrence Almond would pin Mark Burkart (Fr., Cody, WYO.) of Northern State at the 2:08 mark of the match. The Vikings now had a 15-0 led on the Wolves.

149- Jesse Wood (R-Jr., Milbank, S.D.) of Northern State University got down early to Jason Lozier 4-0, but before the first period was over Wood would get a reversal and a near fall to go up 5-4. The score remained 5-4 in favor of Wood going into the third period. Wood used a takedown to go up 7-5 after an escape by Lozier. Lozier would get a reversal and the point for riding time to take the match 8-7 and gave Dana a 18-0 lead.

157- Scott Taylor of Dana College got a takedown early in the first period to go up 2-0 over Dana Dargatz (Sr., Webster, S.D.) of Northern State. Dargatz got an escape and a take down to go up 3-2, but Taylor got a reversal to go up 4-3 to end the first period. In the second period Taylor got an escape to go up 5-3. Taylor blew the match wide open in the third period by getting a takedown, a near fall and the riding point to win the match 10-3. The Vikings were now ahead 21-0 in the dual.

165- Matt Englund (Sr., Pierre, S.D.) of Northern State University got a takedown in the first period to go up 2-0 against Trent Leicheiter. In the third period Englund got an escape to go up 3-0 over Leicheiter, and hung on to win 3-1. Englund improved his record to 4-10 with the win and got the Wolves on the board in the dual as they trailed 21-3.

174- Jason Hill (Sr., Milbank, S.D.) of Northern State University went down 5-0 against Marshall Marquardt early in the second period. Hill would battle back getting an escape and a take down to end the second period down 3-5. Hill would tie the score up at 5-5 and 7-7 on a pair of reversals. But Marquardt would use an escape and the riding point to win the match 9-7 and give Dana College a 24-3 lead.

184- Willie Parks of Dana College would win by tech fall 21-6 over Spencer Dockery (Jr., Oak Park, MI) of Northern State University. The Vikings were now up 29-3 over the Wolves.

197- Todd Naasz (R-So., Mobridge, S.D.) of Northern State University and Blair Alderman of Dana College ended the first period scoreless. Alderman went up 4-1 at the end of the second period and would end up winning the match by major decision 11-3 over Naasz. The score in the dual was now 33-3 in favor of the Vikings.

HWT- Wade Jordan of Dana College put the pressure on early in the first period going up 8-0 over Jess Hockley (R-So., Sturgis, S.D.) of Northern State University. Jordan kept the pressure on in the last two periods and got the major decision 14-1. Dana won the dual 37-3 over Northern State.

The Wolves will travel to Moorhead, Minn. on February 2nd to take on the Concordia Cobbers. Wrestling will start at 7:00 pm.
