Mustangs Slip by Wolves

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State University Wolves (3-6, 0-3 NSIC) fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs (4-6, 1-1 NSIC) 16-19 in the Barnett Center. It came down to the last match of the evening as Joel Wipperfurth defeated Todd Naasz 8-1 to give the Mustangs the conference win.

The Wolves got victories from Jess Hockley, Jesse Wood, Dana Dargatz, Matt Englund, and Jason Hill, but it wasn’t enough. Each team won five matches but the Mustangs were able to get a couple to technical decisions one by Kurt Smith and the other by Tim Johns.

Jesse Hockley would get his win in double overtime and Dana Dargatz would win in overtime.

HWT- Jess Hockley of NSU and Jeremy Schafer of SMSU wrestled to a 0-0 tie after one period of wrestling. Schafer scored the first point in the match early in the second period on an escape. Both wrestlers were issued a stalling point to end the second period 2-1. Hockley tied the match up at 2-2 with an escape early in the third. Regulation ended with the score 2-2. There was no scoring in overtime so they went into a tiebreaker. Southwest won the flip and chose down. Schafer scored on an escape in the first thirty seconds of the second overtime. In the second thirty seconds of the second overtime Hockley scored on an escape to tie the score 3-3. Hockley went up 4-3 on another escape and won the match as he improved his record to 11-16 on the year. This put the Wolves up 3-0 in the dual.

125- Kurt Smith of Southwest Minnesota State dominated the first period over Austin Johnsrud of Northern State as he used a variety of moves to go up 14-0 to end the first period. Smith got a take down early in the second to go up 16-0 and get the technical fall. This put the Mustangs up 5-3 in the dual.

133- Logan Hayman of Northern State and Ryan Reed of Southwest Minnesota State wrestled to a 0-0 tie at the end of one period. Ryan Reed got three points on a near fall to go up 3-0. Hayman used an escape to get to within 3-1 going into the third period. Reed would win the match 4-1 and give the Mustangs an 8-3 lead in the match.

141- Keefer Jensen went up early over Mark Burkart as he got a take down to go up 2-0 in the first minute of the match. Jensen used a near fall to go up 5-0 at the end of the first period. Going into the third period the score remained 5-0. Burkart got a take down in the period but would end up losing 6-2 to Jensen. The Mustangs widened their lead to 11-3 in the dual.

149- Jesse Wood of the Wolves got a take down late in the first period to go up 2-0 over the Mustangs Luke Griffith. Wood kept the pressure on as he used an escape and a takedown to go up 5-0 to end the second period. Wood used another take down to go up 7-0. With the riding time Wood would win the match 8-0 and get the major decision. Wood improved his overall record to 16-10 on the season. The Wolves would climb back into the match as they were only down 7-11 with five matches left.

157- Dana Dargatz of the Wolves and Aldon Struchen of the Mustangs wrestled to a 0-0 tie at the end of one period. Struchen would get an escape to go up 1-0 at the end of the second period. In the third period Dargatz would tie the match up 1-1 on an escape. The match ended 1-1 at the end of regulation. In overtime Dargatz would get a takedown to win the match 3-1 and put the Wolves within one at 10-11 in the dual.

165- Matt Englund of Northern State University and Greg Franks of SW Minnesota State would wrestle to a 0-0 tie at the end of one period. Englund would go up 3-0 with an escape and a take down in the second period. In the third Englund would keep Franks from scoring and go on to win 3-0. Englund improved his record to 5-11 and give the Wolves a 13-11 lead in the dual.

174- Tim Johns of the Mustangs went up 6-0 over Spencer Dockery of the Wolves on a takedown and two 2pt near falls to end the first period. In the second period Johns got two points on a reversal and three points on a near fall to go up 11-0 in the match. Johns used another near fall to go up 14-0 at the end of the second period. Johns used a takedown and the riding point to win 17-0 and get the technical fall. With the win the Mustangs went up 16-13 in the dual.

184- Tyler Johnson of SW Minnesota State went up 2-0 on a take down early in the first period. Jason Hill used an escape to close the score to 2-1 after one period of wrestling. Hill went up 3-2 on a reversal in the second period. Johnson got an escape to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of the second period. Johnson got an escape to go up 4-3 early in the third period. Hill got two points on a reversal and three points on a near fall to go up 8-4 in the match. Hill would win the match and tie the dual at 16-16 going into the final match.

197- Todd Naasz of Northern State University and Joel Wipperfurth of SW Minnesota State wrestled to a 0-0 tie at the end of one period. Wipperfurth used a reversal to go up 2-0 in second period. Wipperfurth got a near fall at the end of the second period to go up 5-0. Wipperfurth would get another take down and with the riding tie would defeat Naasz 8-1. This gave the Mustangs the 19-16 win over the Wolves.

The Wolves will be in action on February 11 th when they travel to Jamestown, N.D. to take on Dickinson State and Jamestown. They will wrestle Dickinson State 4:00 and Jamestown at 6:00 pm.
