Karsky to Present Senior Recital

Carissa Karsky(Aberdeen, S.D.) Northern State University senior, Carissa Karsky of Dickinson, N.D., will present her senior recital on Sun., Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall of Johnson Fine Arts Center.

Karsky is the daughter of Jim and Laura Karsky of Dickinson, N.D. She is a 2004 graduate of Trinity High School, and is earning a bachelor of arts in music/piano, a bachelor of music education in voice and piano, and a German minor from NSU.

During her time at NSU Karsky been a very active part of the NSU School of Fine Arts participating Collegiate Choir, orchestra, and the marching and symphonic bands. She has also accompanied more than 50 fellow students for their senior recitals and worked with the department of theater on several productions.

“Carissa has been invaluable to the NSU music and theatre departments. She has accompanied the choir, several musicals and many fellow students, and has she has mentored and tutored music students, particularly in music theory,” said Bill Wieland, NSU Associate Professor of Music. “Beyond the department, she is the Newman Center music director and works for the student newspaper. On top of everything, she is an excellent student.”

Karsky has earned many honors during her time at NSU including a first place finish in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist competition and an honorable mention at the division competition. She also earned honorable mentions at the 2005 and 2007 South Dakota Music Teachers National Association (SDMTNA) Young artist competition, and served as a mentor with the NSU music learning community.

When asked why she chose NSU Karsky replied, “I chose to attend Northern because of the quality of the music department as well as the individual attention that the students receive from all of the professors, including non-music professors.”

Carissa will perform “Sonata in D minor” by Scarlatti, “Sonata in G op. 79,” by Beethoven, “Mikrokosmos 6 No. 153” by Bartók, “Concerto in E minor, Op. 11” by Frédéric Chopin and “Concerto for Clarinet K 622,” by Mozart. She will also be performing her original composition “Memories.” For her performance of “Concerto for Clarinet K 622,” she will be joined by Anne Jundt, Bismarck, N.D., Katie VandenBos, Platte, Kelsey Pickford, Custer, and accompanist, Dr. Bill Wieland.

Karsky, who plans to graduate in the spring of 2009, will stay in Aberdeen for the time being, but plans furthering her studies in the future.

There is no charge to attend the recital, and the public is cordially invited to attend.
