Sherry Lee Short Exhibition, “Unquiet Dreams,” begins Monday

Released January 22, 2008

Inheritor(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Northern State University School of Fine Arts is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the work of Minnesota-based artist, Sherry Lee Short. The exhibition, entitled “Unquiet Dreams,” begins on Mon., Jan. 28, and runs through Mar. 11, in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery in Lincoln Hall on the NSU campus. The public is invited to attend an artist’s reception which will be held on Mon., Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the gallery.

Short, who describes herself as storyteller, is an assistant professor of drawing and design at Minnesota State University, Moorhead (MSUM), and holds a MFA from the University of Georgia. At MSUM, she instructs all levels of drawing, with a particular emphasis on figure drawing. She is also an accomplished writer, who has been published nationally and internationally.

“The works of art in the exhibition I organized for Northern’s Isaac Lincoln Galley are visual narratives. Each piece contains a story—or a fragment of a story—that is never literal and often includes surreal elements or seemingly odd juxtapositions,” said Short.

“Serious art has always been about the communication of ideas. That’s why there’s so much variety to be found in the visual arts … there are so many personal, regional, national and cultural ideas out there to express. For Ms. Short, what seems to be important is the telling of personal stories with all pretenses removed,” said Northern Galleries Director, Bill Hoar. “Thus, if vagary or symbolism, or the darker side of human experience is what is called for, that’s what the viewer gets. And because the viewer’s experience many not be that of Ms. Short, the door of interpretation is widely opened. This is definitely art that is made for thinking.”

The public is invited to view Short’s work in the Lincoln Gallery.
