Dakota String Quartet to Perform at NSU

(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Dakota String Quartet (DSQ) will visit Aberdeen On Feb. 5-6, presenting educational concerts at Holgate and Simmons Middle Schools. While in Aberdeen the quartet will also give an orchestra workshop with the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony and perform a one-hour recital at Northern State University. The Dakota String Quartet is one of two quartets affiliated with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO).

The recital will be on February 5 at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Berggren Recital Hall. The program will include several works for string quartet, plus movements from Mozart’s “String Quintet in G Minor,” with Dr. Robert Vodnoy on second viola, and “Clarinet Quintet,” with Dr. Alan LaFave on clarinet. The sponsors for the DSQ Aberdeen tour are Home Federal Bank and the South Dakota Arts Council. The concert is free to the public.

“We are especially pleased to have the Dakota String Quartet perform here at NSU as a part of their Aberdeen tour,” said Vodnoy. “The Dakota Quartet is one of South Dakota’s great musical assets, and Dr. LaFave and I are both looking forward to collaborating with them in these final movements from two great quintets by Mozart. The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony members are also looking forward to working on some orchestral music with the quartet, to benefit from their expertise.”

Vodnoy also emphasized the 7 p.m. start time for the Tuesday evening concert is a half an hour earlier than the usual time which NSU concerts and recitals begin.

Dakota String Quartet members include:

Doosook Kim, who has been with has SDSO since 1995 as serves as concertmaster and the first violinist of the DSQ.

Magdalena Modzelewska, who serves as the principal II violinist for the SDSO.

Fei Chen has serves as the principal viola of the SDSO and has been a member of the DSQ since 2000.

Maxim Kozlov has served as the principal cellist in the SDSO since 2005.
