Marriage not a Fairytale in NSU Production of “The Smell of the Kill”

Released February 5, 2008

(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Northern State University theater department will present the comedic play “The Smell of the Kill” in the Johnson Fine Arts Theater, February 13-16 at 7:30 p.m. nightly. Audiences will enjoy humor, maliciousness, and a chilling twist that add up to an evening of great theater.

Friends Molly, Nicky and Debra have endured monthly dinner parties for 18 years so their husbands, long time college buddies, can reminisce. At one such party, the trio finds themselves with a chilly dilemma as the three husbands accidentally lock themselves in a walk in freezer. The situation leads the women to take a good look at their relationships and seriously examine advantages and disadvantages of becoming widows all at once.

As the plot develops it soon becomes apparent that the women have less than fairytale marriages. Nicky, portrayed by Amber Noble Stellner of Lennox, is married to Jay, played by Benjamin Lickteig Bismarck, N.D. Jay has been indicted for embezzlement and expects Nicky to quit her job and hand over her retirement to pay for his attorney. Molly, played by Erin Dahmes of Wabasso, Minn., is married to Danny, portrayed by Kevin Nilson of Webster, who seems to be overly in love with Molly, when in fact they are no longer sleeping together. Finally there is Debra, portrayed by Anne Nguyen of Aberdeen, who is married to Marty, played by Seth Honerman of Sioux Falls. Marty ruthlessly deals in real-estate and has an appetite for other women. As the women contemplate their fate Debra asks, ''People make mistakes, but do you murder them?”

As the plot develops, which wife will be the moral center? Will the men escape with a little frostbite, or will they walk away at all? Plan to attend the NSU production to find out.

“The Smell of the Kill” is directed by NSU senior, Adam Sahli. Sahli, originally from Aberdeen, is currently serves as the director of the Redfield Community Theater.

“Directing as a student is no different then directing for the Redfield Community Theater. My job is no different,” said Sahli.

The set and lighting design is being provided by Larry Wild, NSU assistant professor of theater. Dan Yurgaitis, director and associate professor of theater, is producing the play.

Tickets for “The Smell of the Kill,” are $10, with discounts available for seniors and high school students. Tickets increase $2 at the door. For additional information, call 626-2563 or visit www.northern.edu/wild/thea.htm. The NSU bookstore is open Mon-Fri from 8 a.m. - 4:55 p.m.
