NSU Trumpet Students Take Part in “Reading Is Fundamental”
Released February 12, 2008
(Aberdeen, S.D.) Northern State University music majors and trumpet students Alex Massa, Rapid City, Julia Wakal, Edmonton Alberta, Michael Mower, Sioux Falls, and Craig Kollasch, Spirit Lake, Iowa, along with professor, NSU’s Dr. Grant Manhart, are taking their musical, acting and reading skills into Aberdeen third grade classrooms this month.
A program called “Reading is Fundamental” is being
performed for third graders at Simmons Elementary, May Overby Elementary,
Lincoln Elementary, C.C. Lee, and O. M. Tiffany. The students perform
short pieces on their trumpets, and then perform a dramatic reading
of a book called “Moonlight Over Manhattan” about a
young boy learning to play the trumpet. The program is administered
by Lori Salfrank of the Aberdeen American News, and Deb Schlosser
of the Aberdeen Public Schools.
