NSU Symphonic and Concert Bands to Present Concert

Released February 15, 2008

(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Northern State University Symphonic and Concert Bands will present a concert on Sun., Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts center.

Under the director of Dr. Boyd Perkins the Symphonic Band will perform several exciting and evocative works written for symphonic wind bands. The concert represents music from all over the world including “Paris Sketches Homages for Band,” by English composer Martin Ellerby, “Chorale and Alleluia,” by American composer Howard Hanson, “Blessed are They,” from “A German Requiem,” by composer Johannes Brahms, arranged for band by Barbara Buehlman, “Dance of the Jestures,” from the ballet “The Snow Maidens” by Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky, and “Entry of the Gladiators Thunder and Blazes March,” by Czech composer Julius Fucik.

The centerpiece of the concert, “Paris Sketches,” is a tribute to the city of Paris and the composers who have worked or passed through it. Representing different neighborhoods of Paris, each of the four movements interprets the sounds and sights of that area of the city. Each movement has its own character ranging from comedy to reflection to celebration and they are all tied together with the sounds of the different bells in the churches and cathedrals in the different neighborhoods.

The Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Terry Beckler will present three works including “God of Our Fathers,” by Claude T. Smith, “Rhosymedre” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and “The Gallant Seventh March,” by John Philip Sousa.

“God of Our Fathers” is a challenging theme and variation composition based on the well known hymn tune of that same name. The work features each section of the band culminating with an exciting triumphal final presentation of the melody.

Also performing is the NSU saxophone ensemble presenting some and high-energy jazz saxophone music. The saxophone ensemble is lead by saxophone instructor Fred Hemke.

There is no charge to attend the concert and the public is cordially invited to attend.
