French Chamber Orchestra Presents Young People’s Concert

Released February 29, 2008
(Aberdeen, S.D.) On Mon., Mar. 10, at 9:15 a.m. the French Chamber Orchestra will present a Young People’s Concert in the auditorium of Johnson Fine Arts Center at Northern State University. Middle school and high school students from Aberdeen and the surrounding area are invited to this free concert. The program will include Mozart’s “Divertimento in F Major,” Elgar’s “Serenade in E Minor, Le Déluge Op. 45” by Camille Saint-Saëns, and the famous Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. This concert is sponsored by a Special Projects Grant from the American String Teacher Association through its South Dakota Chapter. Dr. Robert Vodnoy, director of orchestras at NSU, is President of the SDSTA. The concert is presented by and with additional support from the Northern State University Department of Music.
The French Chamber Orchestra, acclaimed as one of France’s
best chamber orchestras, was founded in 1989 and is now based in
Senlis, near Paris, where it is the resident orchestra of the 18th
century Théâtre Impérial in Compiège.
It is equally at home in baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary
music, and takes a particular pleasure in bringing forgotten masterpieces
to life.
In June 2005, the orchestra made its English debut playing at the
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Their frequent overseas tours
have been met with a delighted reception, particularly in Spain
where the orchestra is one of the most sought after French chamber
groups, with appearances at the prestigious Santander International
Festival, the Montserrat International Music Week, the International
Festivals of Palencia and Gandia and concerts in Madrid, Grenada,
and many other cities. The ensemble made its debut in the United
States with a concert in November 2002, in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln
Center, in New York. They have performed with the great Austrian
pianist, Paul Baruda-Skoda and toured with violinist, Kyung Sun
Lee. The orchestra is currently on tour in the United States and
will appear in Aberdeen on the Community Concerts 2007-08 series
on March 9. The orchestra has recorded several CDs, among which
a special “Homage à l‘Europe” received
an award at the famous Victoires de la Musique on French National
TV. The French Chamber Orchestra is supported by the French Ministry
of Culture, the Council of the Oise, the town of Senlis, and the
Picardy Regional Council.
