Students and Members of Multicultural Office Travel to the Standing Rock Reservation for NSU Day

Released April 3, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Northern State University students from China, Czech Republic, and the Polynesian Club accompanied the Multicultural Student Affairs staff to host NSU Day at McLaughlin High School on Standing Rock Reservation. The students shared their personal experiences of how Northern State University helped to tailor their education.

At NSU Day three presentations were given for students in the elementary, middle, and high school. Following the presentations, the Northern speakers were invited to sit with the students during lunch time to talk about life at Northern and their different cultures. The meal was hosted by the McLaughlin administrators, teachers, students and Parent Committee.

Junior, Lianlian Zhang from Beijing, China, and Lin Lin, graduate assistant at the Multicultural Office, introduced the Chinese culture and performed three dances representing the diverse Chinese groups.

Palva Romova, Czech Republic, gave a vivid presentation about the daily life and cultures from her country, and Connie and Lose Mounga along with an ensemble of Polynesian children shared an interactive Polynesian presentation that included dance and language. Tiffany Baker, Multicultural Office support and member of the Standing Rock nation, was the concluding speaker. Her presentation encouraged the student body to seriously consider the opportunities that higher education brings.

The McLaughlin community was pleasantly surprised to learn about the diversity on the Northern State University campus, and the students enjoyed the Northern presentation,” said Lin. “The presentations offered an eye opening experience to different cultures in the world,” said Lin. “

The NSU Day ended with a dance led by D.J. Peni Mounga, Director of NSU Multicultural Affairs.
