“Tick…Tick…BOOM!” Premieres as Northern State University
Released April 8, 2008
(ABERDEEN, SD) “Forget regret, or life is yours to miss.” A poignant quote by the late Jonathon Larson, creator of the acclaimed musical, “Tick…Tick…BOOM!” which will be presented by the Northern State University department of theater on Apr, 17-19. The nightly production will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Advanced tickets are available at the NSU Bookstore.
Jonathan Larson, who is best known for the Broadway musical, “Rent,” grew up in White Plains, N.Y., where he knew early on that theater was in his blood. After a graduating from White Plains High School, Larson attended Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. and majored in theater. It was at Adelphi that Larson discovered his talent and he began to create musicals of his own. In 1982, with diploma in hand, Larson headed for New York City to seek out life as a composer. As is the case with many aspiring artist, fame did not come easily for Larson. He lived a very bohemian lifestyle in a run down apartment, waiting tables and working on his music.
“Tick…Tick…BOOM,” which opened off Broadway at the Jane Street Theatre on Jun 13, 2001, tells the story of a struggling composer living in New York City in 1990. On the brink of turning 30, and with no prospect of success on the horizon, Jonathan is facing great challenges. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is having great success working on Madison Avenue, while Jonathan continues to wait tables and tries to write the next great American musical. The production takes the audience on the journey through Larson’s life, struggles and experience that led him to write the hit Broadway musical “Rent.”
