NSU Professor Selected for Harvard Program
Also Receives Bush Fellowship

Released April 28, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Dr. A.S. Elkhader, NSU professor of mathematics, has been selected as a member of the Management Development Program (MDP) class of 2008. MDP 2008, which will take place June 14–26 at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass., provides innovative and practical ideas about critical management challenges facing mid-level administrators in the early years of their professional careers.

The program encourages participants to think beyond the confines of their own discipline and area of administrative responsibility. MDP prepares participants to become better leaders of their unit, department, or school, and provides ideas that encourage forward-thinking leadership. Elkhader will then visit 5-6 universities that are classified by the U.S. Department of Education as minority serving institutions to explore ideas on recruitment and retention of minority students into the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Elkader has also been selected by the Bush Leadership Fellows Program to receive a Bush Leadership Fellowship for 2008. Bush Fellowships are granted for full-time study in academic programs (degree granting or non-degree granting), for self-designed study programs and for combinations of academic and self-designed programs.

“Dr. Elkhader has explored new ideas and is initiating plans to increase recruitment and retention of minority students at Northern State,” said NSU President, Patrick Schloss. “There is growing national concern for broadening the base of educational achievement across all cultures. It is great to see a member of our faculty serving on the vanguard of this effort.”

Elkhader, who has been a member of the NSU faculty since 1990, will use the funds from his Bush Leadership Fellowship to cover expenses at the MDP conference, attendance at two national leadership meetings on leadership in higher education and his university visits.
