Description:
The In-School Alternative Mentoring Tutorial Program provides mentoring and tutorial support opportunities to At-Risk students either in-school or after school.  Students are serving as peer tutors and members of the Advisory Board.  Assistance is in the areas of: Language Arts/Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, Computers, and Mentoring (self-esteem).  The Administration, School Board, Trustee members, parents and community are vital.

Program Name:
Northern State University: Management Information Systems
Description:
A small group of computer students design and set up a database on Access 97 software, creating tables, forms, reports and data flow diagram, to organize volunteer information for Volunteer Services at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.Their project is as an optional alternative to an in-class assignment during the semester and will be fully integrated into the course in the spring when the project work is to be completed.

Presentation College: Computer Management System
Description:
A student furthered her skills learned in a computer lab and gained valuable work experience and knowledge while serving a Northeastern Council of Governments (NECOG) training program. She designed a brochure promoting the 10-12 week course, "Entrepreneur ship for Single Parents and Minorities" (ESPM) program, offered free of charged to the public. The professor plans further incorporation of service-learning opportunities into classes for the next academic year in response to student's enthusiastic response regarding the experience.
She took on another project in the same semester creating a Power Point presentation for the Aberdeen Police Department public education sergeant, using presentation materials provided on instances of abuse and battering and community resources. The presentation slides allow for the materials to be easily selected and organized for optimum effectiveness with different audiences. The professor plans further incorporation of service-learning opportunities into classes for the next academic year in response to student's enthusiastic response regarding the experience.
