Program Name:
Pana CUSD #8

Description:
The proposed project will aim at expansion of the service Learning projects that were implemented at Washington Elementary (K-2), Lincoln Elementary(3-6), as well as Pana Junior High and Pana Senior High and to explore a career mentorship model of service learning at the High School level. All of the attendance centers are located in the City of Pana. In all instances integration into the academic curriculum will again be a key component.  Reflection and internalizing of the experiences through structured techniques by students and staff will be  incorporated to ensure long range impact. A description of the various activities or programs follows. 1. IN SERVICE - A consultant who is knowledgeable about all aspects of Service Learning will be hired. Major emphasis will be placed on intergeneration into the curriculum, additional techniques for reflection conducted on release time by November 15, 1996 for participating staff members. Staff and students from nonpublic schools or home schools will be afforded the same opportunities for the involvement in t he training, planning, and implementation. 2. PLANNING - Teachers will be given release time or compensated for their time outside of the school day to develop service-learning activities related to their instruction and to plan with building principals, students and community representatives. 3. CROSS-AGE TUTORING - We will expand the successful tutoring program that caused junior high school students to tutor upper elementary grade students last year. Last year the after-school cross-age tutoring program involved Jr. High students assisting upper grade elementary school Lincoln School (Gr. 3-6) students. This year we plan to increase the number teachers and students in the tutoring program that will allow for an increases number of elementary school students in the tutoring program that will allow for an increases number of elementary school students to be served. This will expand the student population receiving tutoring to include Washington School (K-2) in the program. The focus will again be on improved academic performance and attitudes for the students being tutored and enhanced self-esteem for the students providing the tutoring. 4. INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM - We will continue partnership with county care center of Pana and the Pana Health Care Center. The students were involved initially in reading to or writing letters for seniors housed in one of those three institutions. Ultimately each student was paired with a resident. This activity required the student to demonstrate good verbal skills, organizational skills and writing skills. The demonstration of these skills will partially satisfy the State Goals for English and Language Arts. Music performances during lunch and sharing of artwork to brighten the rooms of the seniors is planned again this year. Elementary students and teachers will be encouraged to enter into a Pen Pal activity with residents in these facilities. Last year students from two classrooms at Lincoln Elementary ( Gr. 3-6) participated in the Pen Pal program and followed that with a personal visit to the health care facilities. The staff and students at Washington Elementary (K-2) will be involved in the same program. 5. ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM - We will strengthen our partnership with City Government, and in particular the street department. Last year students participated in a clean-up program with emphasis on public areas such as the Pioneer Heritage log cabins and in a routine clean-up of the city. Recycling of the litter found would then kick-off another initiative of citywide recycling that would include  developing promotional materials, setting up gathering and disposal arrangements involving all  businesses and citizens in Pana. The expansion of this part of our program will involve students from all four of our attendance centers in the cleanup and recycling efforts. All programs activities will be the responsibility of students, teachers, building principals involved and community representatives involved. 6. COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM - We will continue our partnership with City Government as it relates to city beautification in the downtown area, city hall, pubic areas and the Pioneer Heritage log cabins. Teachers and students from a all four attendance centers will participate in this part of the project. 7. CAREER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM - At the Senior High level, we will develop a new program, that will allow high school students to experience jobs or career related to their particular area of interest and/or academic strength. the Assistant Principal, Health Services Coordinator and Industrial Technology Teacher will develop community linkages that will expose students to a broad range of careers. 8. DISSEMINATION AND REPLICATION ACTIVITIES - Since Pana Community Unit District #8 has had two years of experience in developing a Learn and Serve Program, we are anxious to have our success and procedures with our colleges. We will target the other school districts that are located in the  Christian and Montgomery County region. Administrators and teachers will be invited to visit Pana for a day, visiting with teachers, students, administrators and community representatives. Visitors will leave Pana with a knowledge of programs that can be replicated in their own community as well as as Implementation of our  program.
