The Learn and Serve America Grant was designed to serve children and
involve the community. Fund raising is awarded to schools based on
need and the potential to establish a long term program. Sunset Elementary
has selected to serve Title I and At-Risk students in the area of mathematics.
Goals of the Program: -Increase student learning in basic math skills -Increase
opportunities for academic success -Reduce the potential of literacy -Establish
positive child to adult relationships Program: Tutoring is offered Tues.
and Wed. Afternoons from 3:00 to 4:30. The 90 minute program is designed
to provide students with a combination of activities: -Snack and community
time -Drill and practice of basic math skills -Exploration of math manipulative

Currently 45 students are enrolled in the program. Additional students
will be added throughout the year. Ideally, we would like to have
a 3:1 students to adult ratio. Currently, we need to enroll 12 to
15 volunteers. Tutor responsibilities include setting and cleaning
up the work area, working with small groups and providing input to staff
in regards to student progress. Tutors receive: -On-going training
in working with students in the area of math and small groups -A "Survival
Kit", a small kit of math items of their own -Continued staff support -Time
to meet with other tutors to discuss concerns and problem solve -Child
care services to enable their participation in the program -And most importantly...
The opportunity to make a difference in a child's life.

This component of the program is designed to teach students skills in leadership
and communication while developing their mathematical abilities.
Adult tutors will work with student tutors offering supervision and support.
GOALS -Develop leadership and communication skills -Teach the concept of
"service to others" -Develop skills for self management -Increase student
self-esteem -Provide additional avenue of tutors for program STUDENT SELECTION
Third, fourth and fifth grades students in the school will have the opportunity
to participate as cross age tutors by volunteering. Interested students
would participate in the training sessions and commit to tutoring one day
a week. Students who are already in the Math Tutoring Program will
also have this opportunity. These students would attend tutoring
one day and act as a tutor the next. TRAINING students receive a
minimum of three training sessions prior to working with other students.
Training will include information, discussion and demonstrations in the
area of leadership, organization, and communication. Ideally, we
would like to train adult tutors in conjunction with cross aged tutors.
This would provide consistent training and an opportunity for students
to establish a positive relationship with adult tutors.
