Type of Service: Indirect

Needs Met/Impact Made:
Shelstad was extremely supportive of the Aberdeen Service-Learning Center (ASLC) and its mission. Shelstad said that the ASLC resources had a tremendous impact on his office. "Without you I would never have thought of hooking up with the schools. The resources were great, and you provided me with some great brainstorming opportunities," he said. He went on to praise the projects completed by the NSU/Bormes class, which impacted his organization by enhancing community awareness through radio promotions and "speakers' bureau type presentations. The Bormes class also facilitated a fundraiser which earned approximately $1000 for Habitat for Humanity. This money was to be matched by a grant from Wal-Mart.
Shelstad indicated that a more detailed account of the work done by the Flakas and Kelly classes was lost in a fire which consumed the Aberdeen Habitat for Humanity office. He would definitely recommend other community agencies take advantage of ASLC resources and participates in service-learning projects.
