Director of NSU Reading Center Presents and National Conference

(Aberdeen, S.D.)  Northern State University’s Denise Finstad presented at the 34th Annual National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) annual conference, which was held Mar. 10-13 in Columbus, Ohio. For over 25 years NADE and its members have helped learners at all levels of preparedness realize their full academic potential.

Finstad’s presentation, “Creating Podcasts…You Will Do More Than Listen,” focused on technology, online education and reading. Finstad introduced free online programs available to assist instructors with making Audacity (audio casting), or podcasting and Jing-screencasting (video/audio recording what items on a computer screen.) She provided attendees examples of teacher and student samples used in her classes utilizing these programs.

“We discuss ways of using these technologies across the curriculum giving students access or repeated access to videos or demonstrations on learning a skills,” said Finstad.

Finstad, who came to NSU in 2003, is the director of the Reading Center and an instructor with University College. She has a B.S. Ed in elementary education and an M.S. Ed. from NSU. She will complete her Ed.D, with curriculum and instruction elementary education with reading specialization, from the University of South Dakota this summer.
