NSU NANTA Group Invited to Perform at Festival of Cultures
Released April 5, 2010
(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Northern State University NANTA (NSUN) group has been invited by Lin Lin Lin, International Program Coordinator and Advisor of International Relations Club & Multicultural Affairs at SDSU, and alumna of NSU, to perform at SDSU’s “Festival of Cultures” on Fri, Apr. 9, 2010. The festival will be held 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Frost Arena in Brookings, and NSU’s group will perform at 12:30 p.m.
More than 40 people are planning to travel to Brookings including the NSUN players, five dancers, two photographers/videographers, Tomee Brown from the NSU Student Association, Dongsu Lee from the Korean Student Association, (KSA), and Rachel Schipper from the Exponent staff. Stacey Schmidt, the International Student Advisor, Collin Rasmussen English as a Second Language instructor, and Sungbo Yang, the Impact dance troupe leader and several chaperones and fans will accompany the group.
According to Eric Gerber, Director of NSU United Campus Ministries
“NSU NANTA is a unique blend of generations and cultures which translates as ‘beating wildly or pummeling.’ NANTA consists of four percussionists who, much like the “Blue Man Group,” does non-verbal entertainment through music, pantomime and other various means of non-verbal expression. It is a modified and contemporary version of a more traditional Korean drumming called “Salmunori”, which translates ‘to play four things’ or ‘four instruments (drums).’”
NSU NANTA utilizes some of the more contemporary rhythms and style of NANTA, but has aimed for the Salmunori traditional drums.
Due to financial restrictions, the NSU NANTA could not afford the traditional instruments and was innovative in simulating the traditional Korean drums, “American style,” added Gerber. Borrowing from other examples like the musical “Stomp” and the Blue Man Group, NSU NANTA utilizes trash cans and pails to accomplish a unique sound of their own.
NSU’s NANTA group is comprised mostly of International Students with 23 from Korea, one from China, and three Americans including one NSU History Professor and the group’s director. NSU NANTA, with its unique mixture of generations, cultures, and sounds, is entertainment for all to enjoy!
