NSU Hosts 57th Annual Math Contest

Released April 6, 2010

(Aberdeen, S.D.)  Northern State University will host the 57th annual Mathematics Contest beginning at 10 a.m. on Wed, Apr.14, at the Barnett Center on the NSU campus.

The contest traditionally features four divisions:  Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Senior Math. Contest director, Dr. A. S. Elkhader, NSU professor of mathematics, anticipates roughly 1100-1300 contestants from 65 – 70 area schools will participate in the event. Mathematics faculty - Dr. A. S. Elkhader, Dr. Ricardo Rojas, Dr. Tariq Alraqad and Dr. Bill Haigh are responsible for constructing tests for each of the four divisions.

In addition to the individual awards of first through fifth place in each division, a traveling trophy will be awarded to the school having the highest percentage combined score in each division. Of the schools that have first place winners, a plaque will be awarded to each coach. Awards will be presented to contest winners at an assembly scheduled at 1 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center auditorium.

Contestants are regularly enrolled students in representing schools. Schools may enter as many contestants in each division as desired, but no student may enter in more than one division or compete in the same contest division more than once.

Students participating in the senior math portion of the event may elect to be considered for NSU math scholarships by completing and submitting NSU scholarship forms.
