Guidelines and Policies
The Northern State University Office of University Relations is responsible for ensuring that all communications that represent NSU convey a consistent and cohesive identity that is shared by the entire university community. All publicity and promotional materials for Northern State University must be approved by the Director of University Relations prior to production.
In order to ensure the consistency, quality, and accuracy of all publications it is required to go through the Director of University Relations when requesting our service. The director is responsible for delegating projects and managing work load.
Our work is designed to support the administration, faculty and staff in their efforts to recruit and retain students, strengthen alumni interest and support, and provide the public with information pertaining to NSU.
The following set of guidelines and policies are intended to acquaint the NSU community with the optimal way to utilize our department and the services we offer.

University Relations should be contacted prior to statements made to the general public regarding. Including...but not limited to: |

News media through press releases, news/press conferences, television interviews, etc. |
|
• |
Releasing any information about an event, emergency, crime, controversy, etc. that occurs on the NSU campus |
|
• |
Putting faculty/staff members in contact with the proper media authority seeking their expertise | |

Web Site Standards
When designing a Web site that will represent NSU it is important that the following guidelines be followed to ensure that all sites convey the message of consistency. The following must be included in all NSU Web sites.

Every page must be linked to NSU's home page. |

The index or "home" page should have an approved NSU logo. |
|
• |
One the official colors must be primary on any publication or Web site that represents NSU. All are listed in the table below. | |

Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a proprietary color system matching specific spot colors and standardized ink color widely used in the graphic arts industry, includes approximately 800 basic colors for both coated and uncoated paper.

Graphic Design Policies
University Relations offers in-house graphic design Graphic Design for the NSU community. We produce a wide variety of quality promotional and publicity materials that can be distributed in print or Web formats in order to best promote NSU. In order to continue to produce the highest quality designs and layout we ask that the following guidelines be strictly adhere to.

All publications and promotional materials including business cards, letterhead, posters, flyers, newsletters, advertisements, billboards, etc. must be approved by the director of University Relations prior to final printing. |

Any office seeking Off-Campus Printing for a publication must contact University Relations with ALL information at least 8 weeks prior to the date you wish to have the project. |

• |
Any office seeking On-Campus Printing for a publication must contact University Relations with ALL information at least 3 weeks prior to the date you wish to have the project. |
|
• |
If you wish to have a photographer at your event, contact UR at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the event.

All requests for graphic design work will be processed in the order that they are received. | |
Additional Information About What We Do
The director of University Relations is responsible for providing public relations counsel to the President and other University administrators.
University Relations is available for assistance in the planning, organization and logistics of communication projects.
The staff of University Relations works with several departments to create the materials used in recruitment and retention of students.
Our staff is available to assist with graphic design services and content for publications, advertising or public relations directly related to NSU.
Photographs taken for University Relations are intended for use in publications and marketing that are directly related to NSU. Please call in advance to request that we be on hand to photograph your event.
