NSU Gerontology Programs prepare

You for a Better life!

 
NSU Studies in Gerontology

Building on what persons know from contact with seniors, four core courses will broaden knowledge and skills.  All gerontology classes are offered both on-campus at NSU and by video conferencing anywhere in South Dakota through local school district studios or at Pierre, Rapid city or Sioux Falls University Centers.  Classes can also be taken from work or home via internet and/or streaming videos on newer computers.  Classes meet in late afternoon either one or two days per week.  MIssed classes can be reviewed via internet.  Tuition can be paid over the four months of class meetings. 

CORE GERONTOLOGY COURSES

2 credits  SOC 205 - Introduction to Aging:  An interdisciplinary understanding of aging including physical, social, psychological, and spiritual aspects; faculty in each area will share information on their special dimension; key questions YOU want answered about aging can be your research study topic. 

3 credits  SOC 288 – Gerontology Issues on Aged Care & Community Services:  In sequential sessions, the class will study crucial issues for older adults in
ealthcare and social services. Cardio-vascular care, diabetes management, depression diagnosis and treatment, and social services needed to handle these or other typical aging conditions will be reviewed. Course will be available live or on-line.

2 credits  PSYC 328- Psychology of Adulthood and AgingNeeds, problems and personal concerns of aging, positive coping and adjustment processes studied.

3 credits  SOC 458 - Sociology of Aging:  Studies social changes in life of older persons including family support and friendship patterns in different groups.

1 credit  SS 396 - Internship / Fieldwork in Community Service: Practical skill development – direct work with older people. (This is a core course for the Certificate option and an elective course for all other degree options)

Option ofHLTH 240 or BIO 288

3 credits  HLTH 240 - Health and Fitness for Older Adults:  Prepares students to design and guide life-long fitness programs for older adult wellness. 

3 credits BIO 288 - Health and Physical Aspects of Aging: Introduces students to the body through the organ systems and the key symptoms of human aging.
