The Department of Special Education

The Special Education program at Northern State University provides a wide variety of practical experiences and interactions with individuals with disabilities. Students intending to major in special education will examine all aspects of special education including methods of inclusion, resource rooms, collaboration, and individualized programming.

Elementary or secondary education majors may elect a supporting major or minor in special education. Special education majors may also double major in elementary education with their special education major. The special education major at Northern State University leads to a K-12 certification in special education. The minor in special education does not prepare students for certification in special education but does provide regular education classroom teachers with skills and methods to enhance their teaching of students with special needs in regular classrooms.

A major in Special Education requires 35 semester hours of core courses and 34 semester hours of specific courses required for teacher education in the State of South Dakota.
