Distance Learning Description
Distance learning (DL) courses are an alternative flexible learning environment to traditional classroom instruction. Lacking the traditional classroom student instructor interaction, students enrolled in DL courses are required to take a more proactive role in the learning process. Course instructors develop and organize a logical sequence of readings, assignments, discussions, and assessments to aid and assess the students’ learning progress. While DL courses are designed to provide students maximum schedule flexibility, DL courses are not self-paced; all work must be completed as scheduled.
Northern State University uses the Desire2Learn (D2L) course management system for online course delivery. While NSU strives to provide access to D2L 24/7, there are times when D2L will be unavailable for planned maintenance or unanticipated system outages. Anticipating the unexpected outage occurrences DL students are strongly encouraged to complete assignments, discussions, assessments, and other course requirements early, waiting until the deadline to submit, is discouraged.
Instructor’s delivering DL courses are not expected to be available 24/7; communication responses may be delayed for several hours/days. Additionally, instructors delivering DL courses are not responsible for training students on the use of D2L. Students desiring enrollment in distance learning courses are expected to be familiar with the NSU D2L course management system prior to enrollment. Northern State University does offer a one credit course (IDL 192) to provide DL students basic D2L navigation and operational skills. Students unfamiliar with D2L may experience difficulty completing distance learning courses and should proactively seek assistance from Net Services Helpdesk staff.
Distance learning student responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Read the course syllabus
2. Follow instructions for submitting assignments, discussions, assessments, or
questions related to course content.
3. Complete and submit assignments, discussions, or assessments prior to
established deadlines.
4. Routinely login/access D2L (several times each week)
5. Submit all email communications related to course using D2L email module
