LEARN THROUGH LITERATURE

Fall semester 2003

Editor Mrs. Gayle Bortnem

Students in first grade learn about Families!
During the first month of school, our
class has been learning about how families are alike and different. Children this age learn best when they feel comfortable and safe i their environment (our classroom).
By learning about our families, it helps establish a bond and secure feeling. We have used different types of literature to understand about differences in families.

Reading is enjoyable for all-
All ages love to have the experience of reading and being read to. Studies show that no age is too old to have a quality story read to them. We are reading Uncle Jed's Barbershop this week to learn about some historical events and how a special family dealt with them. If your child asks you about the "Depression" or "Segregation" this may be where it comes from. Please let me know if you have any questions.

       SINGING-ACTING-EATING-ART
The children have been learning songs about families, acting out fairy tales, and eating some of your favorite foods. The lunch room has been the site of some very interesting conversations about how your kitchens are run.
At this age, children learn through their play, sharing and talking with others. This has been a wonderful unit for all!!
