H1N1 Up-Date

State launches gateway web page for H1N1 flu

(PIERRE, S.D.) – If you’re looking for information about H1N1 flu in South Dakota, the state has a new gateway Web page to help, http://h1n1.sd.gov.

The site has links to information from the various state agencies involved in H1N1 preparations, such as weekly surveillance data from the Department of Health and an H1N1 action plan for schools from the Department of Education. It includes a separate section for health care providers, with downloadable patient education materials on flu prevention and links to relevant guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Web site has links and resources for businesses and employers, parents, pregnant women, schools and child-care providers. As H1N1 flu vaccine becomes available, the site will include a running schedule of vaccination opportunities.

“We have been sharing information about this virus and its spread since it was first identified this past spring,” said Doneen Hollingsworth, secretary of health. “This Web page is just one more way to reach people and make it easier for them to find what they need to know about H1N1 flu.”

H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in October. The first doses will be targeted to groups at highest risk for H1N1, such as pregnant women and health care workers. People not in the risk groups are encouraged to wait for vaccinations until more vaccine is available in late October and November.

In addition to vaccination, personal precautions should be taken to help stop the spread of influenza and other illnesses:

• Wash hands often with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand gel.
• Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve, not into your hands.
• Stay home when you’re sick. – until 24 hours after symptoms are gone – without fever-reducing medicine.

Campus Alert System

Your safety and security is important to Northern State. That's why we have implemented a Campus Alert System for all students, faculty, and staff. In the event of an emergency, you can have critical weather and other emergency-related alerts sent directly to your cell, home, and/or office phone or email.

You may choose the way(s) in which you will be notified.

Mobile Phone
Second Mobile Phone
Home Phone
Business Phone
Campus Assigned Email
Secondary Email
MS (text message sent to mobile phone)
Instant Messaging

Note: You will be able to assign priorities to each of the above; your priority one device(s) will be notified first, followed by your second, and so on. Once you acknowledge the alert, further notifications will not be sent.

In order to receive these important alerts, you must complete these registration steps:

  1. Go to Everbridge

Enter your authorization code and confirm that your member ID that is displayed on the next screen is correct.

  2. Select “No” when it asks you if you are an existing Everbridge member.

Create a numeric password, between 6-10 digits long. Be sure to write this down and keep in a secure location for later.

  3. Select a password reminder.

  4. Create an alias user ID and an alpha-numeric password. This alias user ID and alpha-numeric password combination can be used in place of your member ID number and numeric password in the future when updating your account. Write both of these down, too!

  5. Verify the personal address information displayed.

  6. Confirm/add phone and email contact information* using hyphens for phone numbers and entering your cell phone number again for the SMS/text message section (if chosen).

  7. Set the priority levels (the order in which you wish to be notified by device type) for both emergency and standard alerts. Note that all 8 do not need to be selected, and that NA (not applicable) means that you will not receive an alert of that type.

  8. Retain a copy of your confirmation notice for your records, so that you can update your account anytime you have a change in personal contact information, switch cell phone providers, add an email account, etc. Please note that you are responsible for keeping your information up-to-date. To do so, go to https://www.everbridge.net and click “Log In.”
