Program Overview
A major focus for Northern State University is the preparation of
professional educators. Over one-third of the state's teachers are graduates of
one of our teacher education programs. The School of Education provides the
professional education course work required for certification in the state of
South Dakota as a grades K-8, K-12, or 7-12 teacher. Certification requirements
can be met through a program culminating in the Bachelor of Science in Education
degree or as post-baccalaureate preparation.
Any student who plans to major in elementary, secondary, or K-12 education at
Northern State University must complete the system-wide core, institutional
graduation and degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Education,
professional education courses, and major and minor requirements as established
for the appropriate discipline. Students who successfully complete a teacher
education program will be recommended for a teaching certificate after
submitting the application to Enrollment Services.

Program Information
Admission to Teacher Education
In addition to application to Northern State University, students in
elementary education, K-12 education, and secondary education programs must
apply for admission to teacher education. Transfer students and students who
change to an education curriculum must apply for and be accepted into teacher
education before they may register for professional courses in teacher
education.
Admission to teacher education requires:
- Competency in reading, English proficiency, writing and mathematics as
shown by minimum scores on the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).
The PPST, which must be taken during the freshman or sophomore year
(freshman year is highly recommended), is administered on campus six times
each year. Students register to take the PPST in the University College
where preparation workshops are also provided. Students must seek extra help
in areas of academic weakness before retaking the test.
- A minimum 2.60 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
- Proficiency in English and speech as evidenced by a minimum of C in ENGL
101 and SPCM 101, SPCM 215, or SPCM 222.
- Completion of required system-wide core courses.
- Completion of EPSY 302 and the sophomore field experience with minimum of
C.
- Advisor approval and signature on application for admission to teacher
education.
Application for admission to teacher education implies that the student
wishes to be considered and recommended for certification as a teacher after
completing the education program. Prospective teachers must, therefore, continue
an accepted level of scholarship and must also agree that their actions and
general appearance will conform to appropriate standards for professional
educators.
Students who have not been admitted to teacher education will not be allowed
to register for professional education courses (e.g. SEED 300, 301, 450, ELED
320, 330, 353, 360, 440, 450, special methods courses, and upper division
special education courses). For a complete list of courses that require
admission, consult the Teacher Education Policy Handbook.
Once accepted into teacher education, students must maintain a cumulative GPA
of 2.60 and a 2.60 GPA within their major.
Students seeking certification in the K-12 programs of art, music, physical
education, special education or world languages must complete methods courses
and student teaching at both the elementary and secondary levels. Contact the
coordinator of the appropriate department for instructions.
For information about admission to teacher education policies for
under-represented populations, students with disabilities, and certified
teachers, consult the Teacher Education Policy Handbook.
Students with completed baccalaureate degrees seeking teacher certification
may be allowed to enroll in professional courses for one semester pending
completion of admission requirements under the Policy for Post-Baccalaureate
Candidates (consult the Teacher Education Policy Handbook).
Sophomore Field Experience
Students registered for EPSY 302 Educational Psychology and transfer students
who apply for admission to the teacher education programs will receive specific
instructions for completion of the Sophomore Teacher Field Experience. Students
must purchase from the college bookstore a teacher education portfolio which
contains the Teacher Education Policy Handbook and the Sophomore Field
Experience Handbook and explains the requirements in detail. Each student must
observe and assist a teacher for a minimum of three full school days (students
who miss one or more days of the experience will be required to complete a
second experience). Students will not be approved for admission to teacher
education and professional education courses until this requirement is completed
and the required paper is returned to the EPSY 302 instructor and then filed in
the office of the Dean of Education
Junior Field Experience
Every teacher education major must complete the junior field experience as
part of an established class.
Elementary education students complete their junior field experience
requirements in two blocks of methods courses. The morning elementary junior
field experience includes ELED 301, 440, 450, 353, and EDFN 325 while the
afternoon elementary junior field experience includes ELED 301, 320, 330, and
360. The School of Education requires that the morning experience be taken prior
to the afternoon experience. Any exception to this policy must be requested in
writing as outlined in the Teacher Education Policy Handbook. Class schedules
must be carefully planned to meet this requirement.
Secondary education students complete the junior field experience requirement
by registering for SEED 301, 300, 450, SPED 405, and EDFN 325 during the same
semester.
Students are assigned to an elementary, middle, junior high, or senior high
school classroom in their subject areas for a total of eighty hours.
Professional Semester in Education
To qualify as a teacher, students must select one semester as the
professional semester in education and enroll in the appropriate professional
block courses and student teaching experience, ELED 488, SEED 488, or SPED 488.
The time for student teaching should be carefully selected since students may
NOT enroll in any other course, nor be active participants in any college
activity except by special permission from the Director of Field Experience. At
least ten weeks of the professional semester will be devoted to student
teaching.
Students must make application for the professional semester during the
semester before they plan to student teach. The application date will be
announced during the first three weeks of the semester. (No applications for the
semester(s) will be accepted after October 31 [for student teaching in the
spring] and February 28 [for student teaching in the fall]). To qualify for the
professional semester, the student must have been admitted to teacher education
and must have maintained the following minimum grade point averages: (1) 2.60
average in a declared major; (2) C average in a minor field (where applicable);
and (3) 2.60 cumulative grade point average.
Students in elementary, K-12, or secondary education enroll in the following
eight semester hours of professional coursework during the balance of the
semester:
EDER 415, Educational Assessment (2 credits)
EDFN 439, K-12 Issues (2 credits)
EPSY 420, Classroom Management and Discipline (2 credits)
HLTH 400, Elements of Health (2 credits)
The Director of Field Experience assigns the subject and/or grade area, time,
cooperating school, cooperating teacher and university supervisor. The student
teaching assignment is based on subject combination or grade area, availability
of approved schools and cooperating teachers, and the individual student needs.
Student teachers will be assigned in the major and minor (or areas of
specialization) declared at the time of the student teaching assignment. An
additional major, minor, or area of specialization may be added to the program
after student teaching, but may require additional practicum hours and methods
classes for certification.
Student teachers are expected to take part in all activities required of
todayŐs teachers. They will accept activities and responsibilities outside the
classroom, e.g. in the school and community. Students are urged to plan finances
so that part-time work will not be necessary while they are student teaching.
PRAXIS II Exams in pedagogical knowledge by South Dakota Board of Regents
policies are required of students completing teacher preparation programs during
the student teaching semester at the studentŐs expense. Specialty content area
exit exams are required for each major prior to graduation.
Teacher preparation programs
The education of teachers remains an important aspect of the universityŐs
statewide mission, as the diverse and highly respected teaching programs at
Northern State University demonstrate. Over one-third of the stateŐs teachers
are graduates of one of our teacher education programs. The School of Education
provides the professional education course work required for certification in
the state of South Dakota as a K-8, K-12, or 7-12 teacher. Certification
requirements can be met through a program culminating in the Bachelor of Science
in Education degree or as post-baccalaureate preparation.
Teacher education programs available include elementary education (K-8
certification), Art Education, Music Education (both vocal and instrumental),
Physical Education, Special Education, World Language Education in French,
German, and Spanish (K-12 certification), Biology Education, Business Education,
Chemistry Education, History Education, Language Arts/English Education,
Mathematics Education, Social Science Education, and Speech/Debate Education
(7-12 certification). Forty-four separate endorsements on teacher certificates
are offered from kindergarten to driver education, school health to Indian
Studies, and biology to social science.
Admission Requirements

complete the Sophomore Field Experience, and pass a basic skill test in reading
writing, and mathematics (PRAXIS I).
For admission to student teaching, students must have completed all methods
courses and professional block courses with a minimum grade of C, have no
incompletes in course work, and demonstrate a minimum cumulative and major grade
point average of 2.60.
Graduate Studies
Graduate programs leading to certification in elementary and secondary
principalship, special education director, and school counseling are also
provided. Master of Science in Education degrees are available in Teaching and
Learning with emphases in educational studies, elementary classroom teaching,
health and physical education, language and literacy, secondary classroom
teaching, and special education.
Accreditation
Northern State University is accredited by the North Central Association of
College and Schools, and the School of Education is accredited by the National
Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The music programs
are also accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. All of the
universityŐs teacher preparation programs are approved by the South Dakota
Department of Education and Cultural Affairs.
Additional Information
Between 150 and 180 K-12 teachers, administrators, and school specialists are
graduated each year from Northern State University. They staff classrooms and
schools from South Dakota to Texas and California to North Carolina.
In addition to certification and graduate programs, the Northern State
University School of Education provides a wide array of professional development
opportunities through the extension office including a Technology in Teaching
and Learning Academy each summer for K-12 teachers.
The School of Education is housed in the newly remodeled Gerber Building with
faculty offices, spacious classrooms and is the most technologically advanced
building on campus with 700 local area network (LAN) connections and computers
in the classrooms. Faculty in the School of Education have had intensive
training in the integration of technology into instruction and incorporate
technology into their classes. In the teacher education program, students
develop electronic portfolios from components assigned in their classes that are
compiled and burned onto a CD during their professional semester as a
culminating experience. The electronic portfolio project has been cited state
wide as an exemplary program. Teacher education graduates are well prepared in
the use of technology in classrooms.
As a part of the activities in the new State-Wide Center for E-learning at
Northern State University, students in teacher education programs will be
trained in the development of distance curriculum and the use of distance
delivery classrooms. Students will have opportunities to work with master K-12
teachers in the distance delivery of classes and enrichment activities to K-12
students.
