Many students on campus will need some form of academic help during their time at NSU, and there is free help available to any NSU student. The University College provides academic support with the following services:
Writing Center
Dacotah Hall 209
626-7782
The Writing Center helps students improve their writing skills. Tutors do not do the work for the students; instead they sit down with them individually to discuss the writing at hand and how to improve. Students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center at any stage of the writing process, from choosing a topic to polishing a final draft. Hours are generally Monday through Thursday mid-morning to late afternoon, as well as some evening hours. Students may drop in for help or make an appointment.
Math Center
Dacotah Hall 209
626-7782
The Math Center is staffed by tutors who will assist students in their math classes, or any other classes that require math. They help students individually or in small groups. As with all tutoring at the University College, tutors will not do the work for the students. They instead help students learn how to solve the problems themselves. Hours are generally Monday through Thursday mid-morning to late afternoon, as well as some evening hours. Students may drop in for help or make an appointment.
Supplemental Instruction
Andy Carr
Dacotah Hall 208
626-3427
Supplemental Instruction is an organized study group program that employs
upper level students to lead study sessions for particular classes.
These classes are chosen based on an instructor’s interest in the program,
and instructors are encouraged to choose their own SI leaders for their
class. This is a non-remedial program open to any student enrolled for
classes that have SI attached to them. It takes the approach of combining
“what to learn” with “how to learn,” with the leaders acting as experienced
model students helping other students learn the material in the class.
Based on NSU and national data, students attending SI sessions earn higher
course grades and withdraw less often than those who don’t. The number
of sessions held is variable, but is typically from one to three per week,
and the leader is encouraged to attend class regularly. For more
information on SI contact Andy Carr.
General Tutoring
Andy Carr
Dacotah Hall 208
626-3427
Tutoring is available for most general education classes. Tutors for particular classes are chosen based on instructor recommendation. For more information contact Andy Carr.
PASS Program
Dacotah Hall 201
626-2633
PASS (Partners in Academic Skills and Success) is a federally funded U.S. Department of Education TRIO Program. It focuses on students who meet federal low-income guidelines and whose parents haven’t completed a four-year college degree, and/or those who have a documented disability. At NSU, 150 students participate in the program. It provides close academic counseling and support for students who qualify, using peer mentors, Supplemental Instruction, and expanded tutoring services to help these students during their first couple of years at NSU.

Faculty members are invited to request class appearances or other specific services to assist students in their career development. Please call ahead if you plan to be gone during a class time or want a brief presentation during a class. Possible topics include but are not limited to job trends, employment options in a given major, resumes (traditional, scanned, electronic), interviewing, job search strategies, and general career planning.
You may use the Student Referral and Support Program (SRSP), your own
persuasive efforts, or class requirements to encourage or guide all students
to use our services as they:
Students with business majors are encouraged to work closely with Scott Peterson, LIN-208, regarding employment—internships, on-campus interviews, vacancies, etc.
