St. Paul, Minn. – Northern State’s Matt Hammer and Bemidji State’s Derik Hollyfield have been selected as the NSIC Men’s Basketball Players of the Week.
Hammer, a senior forward from Elkton, S.D., scored 45 points in the Wolves’ two wins to open NSIC play over the weekend. He scored a game-high 30 points in the win over SW Minnesota State. Hammer dropped 17 points in the second half, including 12 in the last five minutes of the game to lift the Wolves to the 81-77 victory. Hammer scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the 78-64 win at Wayne State on Friday night.
This marks the second time this season, and fourth time in the past two seasons that Hammer has been honored by the NSIC for his out standing performances. Hammer was named earlier this season for his 41 point performance in a 103-92 win over in-state rival Augustana College back on December 17 th.
Hammer was picked as the 2005-06 NSIC Pre-Season Player of the Year after being named 2004-05 NSIC Player of the Year and 2005 NSIC Tournament MVP. Hammer currently ranks 18 th all-time in scoring in NSIC history with 1,385 points in 104 games played. He is majoring in Physical Education at Northern State.
