Prospective Student-Athlete
A student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools and junior colleges, and individuals who have officially withdrawn from four-year schools. Any student not yet in the ninth grade become prospects if an institution provides the student with any financial aid and/or benefits that are generally not provided to prospective students.
Enrolled Student-Athlete
A student who is enrolled at NSU and is participating in athletics or has completed his/her eligibility but is still enrolled at the institution.
Contact
Any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect's parent/legal guardian, and a NSU staff member or representative of athletics interests (booster) during which any dialogue occurs.
Representative of Athletics Interests
A booster, alumni, or friend of NSU Athletics who has been a part of any of the following activities:
Recruiting
Any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect's family member/legal guardian by a NSU staff member or representative of athletics interests of NSU, for the purpose of securing the prospect's enrollment and ultimate participation in NSU's intercollegiate athletics program.
Extra Benefit
An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a NSU employee or a representative of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's representative, friend, or family with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
The organization that maintains institutions intercollegiate athletics programs, including NSU's Department of Athletics.
National Letter of Intent (NLI)
An official document administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and utilized by subscribing member institutions, including NSU, to establish the commitment of a prospective student-athlete to attend a particular institution.
NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse
A central clearing house that certifies athletics eligibility for Divisions I and II student-athletes. The Clearinghouse uses high school courses and test scores (ACT/SAT) to determine freshman athletics eligibility.
Recruiting Contact
Any face-to-face, off-campus encounter between a prospect, prospect’s parents (or legal guardian) or relative and a college staff employee or athletics representative; if the conversation goes beyond a greeting.
Recruiting Evaluation
Any off-campus activity designed to assess a prospect’s academic qualifications or athletic ability. This includes reviewing transcripts on the high school campus or watching practices or games.
Prospective Student-Athlete
Any student who has entered the ninth grade.
Official Visit
A visit to a college campus paid in whole or in part by the college. Official visits can be no longer than 48 hours. A prospective student-athlete is limited to five official visits, and one visit per university.
Unofficial Visit
A visit made to a college campus at the prospect’s expense. The college may provide free tickets to an on-campus athletic event in which the college team competes. Transportation to view off-campus practice or competition sites within 30-mile radius are also allowable. There is not limit on the number of unofficial visits a prospect can make.
National Letter of Intent
Official documentation administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and used by universities to establish a prospect’s commitment to attend a certain university.
Quiet Period: College coaches can only have in-person meetings with recruits on their own college campus.
Evaluation Period: Authorized college coaches and personnel can assess a recruit's playing ability and academic qualifications during off-campus visits. During these visits, the college coaches cannot meet with the recruits.
Contact Period: Authorized college coaches and personnel are free to have in-person meetings with recruits off-campus.
Dead Period: Nothing allowed during this period. No meeting or evaluations are allowed, and no unofficial or official visits are permitted.
