April 28, 2002

Senior Andrew Lyke delivers during the second game against Concordia Sunday.

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Northern hung tough but lost 3-2 in the first game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul Sunday at NSU's Fossum Field. CSP scored eight runs in the final two innings of a once-close second game to post a more convincing 12-2 nightcap victory.

Sophomore outfielder Alex Long (St. Helens, Ore.) was responsible for NSU's runs in the first game, belting a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at two. CSP regained the lead for good in the fifth with an unearned run. Sophomore pitcher Shawn Young (St. Paul, Minn.) scattered seven hits a complete game effort.

NSU trailed 2-4 in the top of the sixth of the second game before CSP's bats came alive to provide the insurance runs. Senior pitcher Andrew Lyke (Lakeville, Minn.) took the loss on the mound.

The Golden Bears of CSP improved to 16-8 on the season and 8-6 in conference play. NSU (11-29, 1-17 NSIC) will play Concordia again Monday, with first pitch set for noon.
