ABERDEEN, SD - The Wolves earned a split with instate rival
South Dakota State in double-header action at Fossum Field.
The Wolves took game one 6-4, but SDSU outlasted the Wolves
in eight innings of game two to win 5-3.
With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth inning of game
one, Deacon Burns launched a two run blast over the center field
wall to give the Wolves a 6-4 lead. Burns went 3-4 in game one
with three RBIs.
Matt Paulson shut down SDSU in the top of the seventh inning
giving up one hit and striking out a batter to end the game.
Paulson threw three innings to get the win. He gave up one run
on four hits, struck out two and walked only one.
Paulson relieved Joel Backous, who pitched four innings, giving
up three runs (none earned) on one hit.
Valdie Magstadt gave the Wolves a boost from the nine spot
in the lineup as he went three for three, scored three runs
and had an RBI.
Game 1 Stats
The Wolves had their chances in game two to sweep SDSU but
were unable to get the clutch hit when needed, including in
the bottom of the seventh inning, with the game tied and runners
on first and second, the Wolves grounded into a double play
and stranded a runner on third.
The Wolves had a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning, but
SDSU rallied for a pair of runs tying the game at three. They
struck again in the top of the eighth inning when a single up
the middle knocked in two of the three runners on the bases.
Rhett Gunderson picked up the loss for the Wolves as he went
three innings giving up two runs on three hits. Brian Berendse
got the start and went three innings giving up one run on two
hits. Justin Downes also saw action on the mound as he went
two innings, giving up two runs on five hits.
The Wolves are now 4-12 overall on the season and 1-3 in the
NSIC. SDSU went to 5-16 overall and 1-3 in the NCC.
The Wolves continue non-conference play on Thursday, April
1st when they host MN-Morris for a double-header starting at
2:00 p.m.
