Wolves Split with Mayville State

Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State (7-31) split with Mayville State (26-17-1) in a non-conference doubleheader at Fossum Field Tuesday afternoon. The Wolves won game one 8-6 before stumbling in a 17-3 loss in game two.

The Wolves ended a four game skid as they knocked off the Comets 8-6 in game one. The Wolves got a solid pitching performance from Mike Paulson (2-4) who went the distance, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. He walked three and struck out two of the 34 batters he faced.

Paulson fell behind early after a lead off walk in the first scored, but the Wolves scored two in the bottom of the first and second to give Paulson a 4-1 lead to work from.

Christian Tavzrez got the Wolves on the board early as he launched a two run homer in the second Wolves at bat. The “Pride of Paynesville” Adam Kampsen drilled a solo homer in the sixth to increase his dinger total to 11 on the season. Kampsen finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a sacrifice fly. Tom Keiser went 2-for-2 in the game with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored.

The Wolves found themselves in trouble early in game one after the Comets scored five in the first and three in both the second and third innings.

Matt Sisk (0-2) struggled with his control to start as he went 1 1/3 innings giving up eight runs (six earned) on four hits, two walks and two hits batsmen. Sisk allowed a grand slam in the first after walking the bases loaded.

Jackson Strain came in relief and held the Comets scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, after giving up three runs (two earned). Strain struggled in the sixth as he allowed four runs on three hits, including a three run homer. Mitchell Locke pitched the seventh for the Wolves, giving up two runs on two hits.

Tavzrez and Kampsen both had two hits in game two.

The Wolves committed four errors in game two leading to four unearned runs.

The Wolves take on Presentation College tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in a single nine inning game at Fossum Field.
