Kampsen Named NSIC First Team All-Conference
Downes & Gerrish Named Honorable-Mention
St. Paul, Minn. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has announced the All-Conference teams for the 2006 season. Northern State’s Adam Kampsen was named NSIC First Team All-Conference while Justin Downes and Paul Gerrish were named to the honorable mention team.
Adam Kampsen (So., 3B, Paynesville, Minn.) finished the 2006 season with a .416 batting average, the highest in the NSIC and 45th highest in the nation. Kampsen amassed 64 hits in 154 at bats including 12 home runs, 13 doubles, a triple, 41 RBI, and 35 runs scored. His 115 total bases also led the NSIC while his .747 slugging percentage was second in the league. As of games through May 7th, Kampsens slugging percentage ranked him 24th in the nation. Not known for his speed, Kampsen was also a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen bases this season. Kampsen was named NSIC Co-Player of the Week back on March 20th following the Wolves spring trip to Missouri where he batted .412 with two home runs.
Justin Downes (R-Jr., P/DH, Atwater, Minn.) finished the season strong to end with a .311 batting average. Downes had 41 hits in 132 at bats including eight home runs, six doubles and 28 RBI. Downes was named NSIC Player of the Week back on April 24th after he batted .684 over that week, smashing four home runs and nine RBI. He was 13-of-19 at the plate, scored six times while having a slugging percentage of 1.368.
Paul Gerrish (Fr., P/1B, Filer, Idaho) was second on the team in batting and led the team’s pitching squad. Gerrish batted .336 on the season with 42 hits in 125 at bats. He hit seven home runs and seven doubles while driving in 18 runs.
On the mound Gerrish finished the season with a pair of wins to end with a 3-7 mark. His ERA was a team low 4.66 after making 13 appearances (10 starts). Gerrish had six complete games allowing 49 runs (34 earned) on 71 hits. He led the Wolves with 49 strikeouts and allowed only 23 walks in 69 2/3 innings pitched.
Gerrish finished the season very strong as he picked up two wins over the last week of the season for the Wolves. For his efforts Gerrish was named NSIC Pitcher of the Week on May 8th. His ERA for the week was 1.29 after allowing only two earned runs over 14.0 innings pitched. He also struck out 11 of the 48 batters he faced while walking only two. Gerrish held opponent’s batting average to .188. Gerrish picked up the win against cross-town rival Presentation College after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five and walking two. He backed that up four days later with a gem as the Wolves picked up their first NSIC win of the season over Bemidji State 3-1. Gerrish gave up one run on five hits while striking out six.
A young Northern State baseball team showed constant improvement throughout the season and finished with an 11-36 overall record and a 2-16 mark in the NSIC (sixth place). The Wolves won four of their last six games, including their final two against Bemidji State in NSIC play.
