ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Wolves (4-12, 0-2 NSIC) were matched up with Winona State (7-6, 2-0) in the 2007 Northern Sun conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, SD. Northern's offense was quiet on the day and tallied just three hits in each game of the twinbill. The Wolves fell 8-1 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game. They will play another NSIC doubleheader with the Warriors tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch coming from the hill at noon.

Justin Downes (2-2) took the mound in the first game of the day and kept the Warriors scoreless in the first two innings, allowing just one hit. The Warriors scored in each of the next four innings, however, and tallied their game total eight runs. WSU started the fifth inning with a single to center field and two consecutive Northern errors, which scored one run. A sacrifice fly drove in another run and, after three additional singles, the Warriors had their four-run inning and led the game 6-1. A two-run sixth inning set the final score at 8-1. Adam Kampsen, who reached base on an error in the fourth inning, scored NSU's sole run of the day on an RBI from Matt Tales.

The Warriors tallied 12 hits in the game while the Wolves had three. WSU had three fielding errors to Northern's two. Gaining the win for Winona was Bryan Ruff, who struck out six batters and did not give up an earned run. Downes truck out two batters in six innings from the pitch and gave up 11 hits and four earned runs. Tyler Bauman came in for one inning of relief work and struck out one batter.

In the second game of the day, Northern State came up with an additional three hits, while Winona knocked out nine and scored eight runs. Winona had a three-run third inning in which they came up with two hits, one walk, and a player hit by a pitch. They tagged on another five runs in the seventh inning from six hits and an NSU error. The Wolves struggled to connect with WSU pitcher Don Erdall's curve ball all game and did not get more than one hit in an inning.

Adam Kampsen led the Wolves with two of the team's three hits, including a seventh inning lead-off double. Downes had the third hit for Northern. The Warriors had eight players record hits in the game, including two from Ben Barrone. Brock Pashen (0-3) gave up seven earned runs but recorded three strikeouts. WSU's Erdall pitched the shutout and garnered four K's.
