ABERDEEN, SD – The Northern State baseball team (4-14, 0-4 NSIC) had a productive game two in Sunday’s doubleheader against Winona State (9-6, 4-0 NSIC) but fell short of the win, dropping the game 5-8. The Wolves recorded two more hits than the Warriors, but big innings gave way to the WSU victory. The Wolves dropped a 1-15 decision in game one of the day.
With 15 hits and 15 runs scored, the Warriors had six players with two or more hits in game 1 of the doubleheader. WSU tallied five homeruns in the game, including three in the second inning. The second inning also featured three doubles for the Warriors, which equaled six runs and put the visitors up 8-0. The game progressed with a scoreless third inning but the Warriors tagged on another six runs in the fourth, including a three-run homer by Brett Maxwell. The Wolves countered with one run in the bottom of the inning when Justin Downes crossed the plate with the RBI going to Andrew Lunsetter.
Despite the lack of scoring, the Wolves proved they could make contact with the ball and totaled just three strikeouts in the game. Gaining hits for the Wolves in game one were Jamie Paul, Justin Downes, and Tom Keiser. Mike Paulson took the loss from the bump after giving up 14 hits and 14 runs while gaining three strikeouts. Tyler Bauman had two strong innings of relief work, striking out four of eight batters faced while giving up one hit, a homerun. Jon Bitz kept the Warriors without a hit in one inning of work. Winona State’s Dan Burch earned the win, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three batters.
The Wolves had control over much of the early innings of game two, taking a 1-0 lead after the first following a Peyton McCleary leadoff double and a sacrifice fly by Justin Downes. They increased their lead to 3-0 with a Mike Paulson two-run homer in the second. The Warriors took the lead back in the fourth inning after tallying three hits and three walks and taking advantage of an NSU error. Their lead increased to 8-3 after four more runs came in through the sixth inning, including a three-run homer. The Wolves made a run at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as they drove in two runs, but they fell short and the final score remained 8-5.
Northern out-hit the Warriors nine to seven in the game. McCleary, Kappes, and Paulson each had two hits for the Wolves. Tyler Fries pitched 3.2 innings and gave up three earned runs and five walks while striking out three batters. Tyler Oliver came in for 3.1 innings of relief, striking out four batters and giving up four runs.
The Wolves will return to Fossum Field on Tuesday, taking on Concordia, Moorhead in a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
