April 7th, 2007
WAYNE, Neb. – Wayne State (20-9, 10-2 NSIC) finished their sweep of the Wolves’ baseball team (4-24, 0-12 NSIC) this afternoon in a doubleheader played in Wayne, NE. Northern avoided being shutout by scoring in both games, with the final scores being 7-1 and 13-2.

The Wolves had an impressive first inning to open the day, with Payton McCleary scoring off of an Adam Kampsen double. The Wildcats went on to allow just two more hits in the game as eight NSU batters were fanned out. Defensively, Northern did not allow Wayne a big inning in the game, but the Wildcats slowly tagged on runs in four of their six innings at bat. Justin Downes pitched the complete game, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Kampsen had a two-hit game with one RBI and Mitch Locke collected NSU’s other hit.

Northern State came up with seven hits in the second game of the day and scored two runs, but Wayne State’s nine hits, combined with five walks and seven hit batters, put the game out of reach and the Wildcats took the 13-2 win. Wayne had a seven-run third inning as 11 batters stepped up to the plate. Justin Downes scored Adam Kampsen in the NSU fourth with a single to center field to give the Wolves their first run. Kampsen scored an unearned run in the sixth inning for the team’s other run of the game.

Mike Paulson had two hits for Northern in the game and five other NSU players recorded a single hit. Four Wolves’ pitchers saw action in the game, with Tyler Bauman taking the loss. WSC’s Snyder gained the win from the mound after throwing for four innings.
