ABERDEEN, S.D.- Northern State was unable to contain Concordia St. Paul's offense as the Golden Bears defeated the Wolves 9-5 in Game 1 and 14-1 in Game 2. The Golden Bears out hit the Wolves 26 to 15 in the twinbill and out homered the Wolves 5-to-1.
GAME 1
In the first game of the twinbill the Concordia St. Paul jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, which included a four run inning in the third that saw a couple of two run home runs, one by Andy Judkins and one by Mason Reinhart. In the bottom of the inning the Wolves would come right back as Justin Downes would hit a grand slam to cut the lead to 5-4 going into the fourth inning.
From there it was all Golden Bears as they would out score the Wolves 4-1 the rest of the way to come away with the victory.
Offensively the Wolves were led by Aaron Kappes who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Matt Tales as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. The Golden Bears were led by Derek Mason as he went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI's and Mason Reinhart as he went 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBI's off of his homerun in the third inning.
Justin Downes would get the loss for the Wolves putting him at 4-6 on the season. Downes went 7 innings giving up 13 hits and 5 earned runs, while striking out 5 batters. Blake Devries pitched a complete game for the Golden Bears giving up 8 hits, 5 earned runs, and struck out 9. Devries improved his record to 4-3 with the win.
GAME 2
In game two the Golden Bears came out with their hitting shoes on as they scored 4 runs in the first inning and 10 in the second to take a commanding 14-0 lead. Matt Borman hit two three run homeruns in the second inning for the Golden Bears. The Wolves would hold the Golden Bears scoreless the rest of the way but were only able to manage 1 run in the game.
Tyler Bauman came in for relief for the Wolves pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings only allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Jon Bitz pitched one inning for the Wolves only allowing 1 hit. Tyler Fries went to 1-4 with the loss. Eric Utoft improved to 3-2 on the year going 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out 6 batters.
The Wolves were led by Adam Kampsen as he went 3-for-4 in the game with the only RBI. The Golden Bears were led by Matt Borman as he went 2-for-3 with 6 RBI's and 3 runs scored. Jake Waldman, Derek Mason, and Greg Winegarden each went 2-for-4.
Northern State and Concordia-St. Paul will meet again tomorrow at Fossum Field for another twinbill, which will start at noon.
