ABERDEEN, SD - The Wolves split a doubleheader with NSIC rival
Wayne State Saturday afternoon. Wayne took game one 14-9 and
the Wolves took game two 8-6.
Game one saw the two teams combine for 23 runs on 28 hits.
Strong winds aided the seven home runs in the game.
The Wolves dug themselves a hole as they gave up five runs
in the first inning of play. The Wolves did close the gap to
one run, 7-6, after the third inning but Wayne State was able
to score in every inning except the second to get the win.
Although the Wolves scored nine runs they still missed opportunities
to get runs across the plate as they left nine men on base and
had ten batters strike out in the game.
Joel Backous (1-2) got the start in game one and went five
innings, giving up ten runs on 11 hits. Brian Berendse pitched
the final two innings giving up four runs on four hits. The
four runs scored on Berendse were on home runs.
Game 1 Stats
The Wolves won game two on a solid pitching performance from
Matt Paulson (2-3). Paulson pitched all seven innings giving
up six runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked only
one. Of the six runs given up, all of them came on home runs
(3 solos, one three run).
Joel Backous led the Wolves on the offensive end as he went
3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Deacon Burns went 1-2 with
two RBIs and two runs scored, while Wes Fisbeck went 2-4 with
a pair of RBIs.
The Wolves are now 7-13 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. Wayne
State is 21-9 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC.
The same two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
at Fossum Field.
