Wolves Split With Winona State

Winona, MN - Northern State split with Winona State as the Warriors came away with a 14-13 win in eight innings in game one, and the Wolves took game two by a score of 2-1.

Game one saw the two teams combine for 34 hits and 27 runs (all but one earned) as Winona State came from behind to score a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, and plate the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a walk off homer.

Deacon Burns and Joel Backous both had three hits in the game.

Northern had four different pitchers see action as Rhett Gunderson (0-3) was charged with the loss. Gunderson gave up two runs on three hits, but only the run in the bottom of the eighth was an earned run. Jared Olson got the start for the Wolves and went four innings giving up six runs on six hits. Charlie Woida and Valdie Magstadt also threw one inning each in the loss.

Game 1 Stats

Game two wasn't nearly the scoring-fest that game one was. The Wolves scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning giving them a 2-1 lead that they held on to as they picked up their first NSIC win of the season.

Mike Murdy led the Wolves with two hits, while Deacon Burns had one hit; that hit was a shot over the right-center field fence that gave the Wolves the 2-1 lead.

Joe Dinger pitched all seven innings for the Wolves, giving up one run on six hits to go with six strikeouts and only two walks. Dinger improved to 1-1 on the season, dropping his ERA to 5.40 on the season.

The Wolves are now 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC. They will host South Dakota State on March 30th at Fossum Field at 2:00 p.m. Winona State is now 12-7-1 and 3-1 in the NSIC.
