ABERDEEN, S.D. -In the bottom of the second freshman pitcher Andrew Corre did not cover first base on a hit fielded by Wes Fisbeck at first. With the lead off runner safe, Corre managed to get two more outs, which could have ended the inning if the lead batter would not have reached. Instead the Warriors started a two out rally that plated five runs.

Corre battled through the third inning, but game up a grand slam to Winona’s Joe Magee, ending Corre’s day. Corre went three innings giving up nine runs on 11 hits. He struck out and walked a batter as he drops to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolves did manage a run in the top of the seventh inning when Valdie Magstadt scored on a passed ball.

Rhett Gunderson pitched the final three innings for the Wolves, giving up a run on four hits. Gunderson did strike out four of the 15 batters he faced.

Game two saw Winona State take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Brett Schmit led off the inning with a solo homer. The Wolves countered with an AdamKampsen homer in top of the second to knot the game at one.

Winona State took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on a two out single scoring a pair of runs.

Kampsen, freshman from Paynesville, Minn., answered again in the top of the sixth as he knocked out his second homer of the game, this time a two run blast over the left field wall making it a 3-3 game. Kampsen finished the game two for three with two runs scored and three RBIs.

The Wolves had two out and were looking to go to extra inning in the bottom of the seventh, but Winona singled on an 0-2 pitch. Then added another single deep in the hole at short to put runners on first and second. Matt Paulson had a full count on Winona’s Ben Vazquez when he fouled off a ball that NSU’s catch Mike Murdy could not hold on to. The next pitch, with the runners going, Vazquez singled to left, scoring the winning run.

Paulson pitched a great game giving up three earned runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out four and walked only one of the 29 batters he faced.

The same two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. on Fossum Field in Aberdeen, S.D.
