Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State (3-13) was swept by Augustana College (14-7) in a pair of game 3-1 and 6-0. The Wolves offense never got going on the day as they had only seven hits and one run. The same to teams are scheduled to meet tomorrow at noon at Fossum Field.
Northern State played a solid first game but fell 3-1 after managing only three hits. Augustana got on the board in the first after the first batter reached after being hit and later scored when the four-hitter singled to center.
The Vikings would score another run in the third inning after Paul Gerrish (0-4) hit a batter, walked a batter and hit another batter to load the bases. A sac fly scored the second run of the game.
The Wolves got their first hit of the game in the fourth inning when Tom Keiser singled to right center, stole second, then stole third, only to be stranded there following a pair of strike outs.
Augustana scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth before the Wolves started a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Kampsen and Justin Downes singled to start the inning. Kampsen scored an unearned run on an error by the left fielder to make it a 3-1 game. A pair of strikeouts followed before Andrew Corre walked to load the bases with two outs. Mike Paulson fouled out to right to end the inning and the Wolves rally.
Paul Gerrish pitched a solid game giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked only one, but Gerrish hurt himself by hitting three batters, two of which scored.
Game two the Wolves offense struggled again as they had only four hits while being shut out.
Matt Reich (1-2) took the loss as he went five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits. Justin Downes came in the final two innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits.
