ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Northern State Wolves (4-18, 0-6 NSIC) dropped a pair of conference games today against the Upper Iowa Peacocks (12-10, 4-2 NSIC). The Wolves lost the first game 14-10 and the second game 16-6.
Game 1
The Wolves gave up 13 runs in the first three innings of the first game of a double header against the Upper Iowa Peacocks on their way to a 14-10 loss.
The Peacocks used a 7 run second inning to open up a 11-3 lead. Upper Iowa had four homeruns in the first three innings of the game taking a 13-3 lead. They also pounded out 17 hits in the game.
The Wolves would come back in the game as they out scored the Peacocks 6 to 1 in the last four innings of the game but it was not enough. Offensively the Wolves were led by Justin Downes as he went 2-for-3 with 2 homeruns, 4 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Matt Tales, Adam Kampsen, and Mike Paulson all had 2 hits apiece for the Wolves. Aaron Kappes had a 3 run home run for the Wolves in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Peacocks were led by five players who each had 3 hits. Nick Fjelland went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Mitch Walser went 3-for-5 with 2 home runs, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Jamie Terres went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored, T.J. Johnson went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI and 1 runs scored and Nate Mendoza went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI’s and 3 runs scored.
Brock Pashen falls to 0-4 with the loss while Zach Raff went all seven innings giving up 14 hits, 9 earned runs, while striking out 7 improving his record to 3-2 for the Peacocks.
Game 2
In the second game of the double header the fell behind 3-0 after an inning and a half. But in the bottom of the second the Wolves would use a Peacock error to help them score 4 runs and take a 4-3 lead. In the third the Wolves would throw the ball around a little bit helping the Peacocks score two runs and take a 5-4 lead after three innings.
The lead would stay at 5-4 until the 5th inning when the Peacocks would score 3 runs to push their lead to 8-4. The Wolves would not give up as they would get a 2 run single to cut the lead in half going into the top of the sixth.
The Peacocks would use eight unanswered runs to take a take a ten run lead at 16-to-6 going into the bottom of the seventh. That is how it would end as the Wolves could not mount any sort of a come back.
The Wolves were led by Justin Downes who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Matt Geissler as he went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s and one run scored. The Peacocks had three betters who had three hits apiece. Nick Fjelland went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI’s, Nate Mendoza went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and 4 runs scored, and Ronnie Kurihara went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
Justin Downes went 4 2/3 innings giving up 8 hits, 7 earned runs, while striking out one. With the loss Downes falls to 2-3 on the year. Lucas Wilsing improved his record to 1-1 on the year as he went 4 1/3 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and striking out 3.
